Can anybody tell me how I can check the gearboxes on a 1991 Princess 35 to tell if they are good, on their way out or they need changing? I'm looking at a nice example with C900hrs on the clock one of the gearboxes has been changed to an MS4 some time back all detailed with receipts, the other is still the original MS3

Before I go getting an engineer aboard how can I check myself if these are both OK?

41B series engines 200hp Volvo's in this one Paul I've been told it came with MS3 as standard one has been changed to an MS4 If it came with MS4 from new as you are saying then something isn't right?! Can you confirm for me

Ms3 was fitted to the TAMD 40 B at 165 hp which is what was fitted to the early P35, maybe this one has been re engines at some point and the original box used .

I'll get back to you on that once I've spoken to the current owner - see below

They are Volvo TAMD 41B 200hp
Having just read a recent survey on the boat the owner had it wrong! They are MS4 port and MS5 starboard.

Going back to my question how can I tell if these boxes are any good? What tests can I carry out to give me some kind of indication of the current condition of them?

They need to give a definite " clunk" when you select gear, make sure oil level is correct , you will find that going forward is softer than reverse, as the forward face of the cone wears , no oil leaks anywhere .
These boxes do fail and there are very little new parts available now.
