I bought a brand new heavy duty Silverline battery charger at the beginning of September for £55. The first time I had to take it out of the box to use it was a couple of months later only to find that it was u/s. Returned it to Silverline (Toolstream, Silverline's service centre) who are refusing to do anything about it as it was more than 30 days old and I hadn't taken out the "extended three year guarantee".

I think that's shoddy service and I will be avoiding Silverline in future.

Yes keep complaining reminding them of consumer rights.
AND
When I had a problem with a Lowrance plotter and did not get the help I sought I posted a complaint on their Facebook page which got me a phone call within the day. Do these guys have a Facebook page?

see: http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/consumer-rights-act
Under the Consumer Rights Act you have a legal to reject goods that are unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described and get a full refund - as long as you do this quickly.

This right is limited to 30 days from the date you buy your product. After 30 days you will not be legally entitled to a full refund if your item develops a fault.

"if your item develops a fault" It didnt develop a fault....

Paid by card? Make it the card issuers problem. Card chargeback also costs the retailer money. The seller hasn't got a leg to stand on.

CRA 2015
"From 30 days to six months

If you discover the fault within the first six months from delivery, it is presumed to have been there from the time of delivery - unless the retailer can prove otherwise.
During this time it's up to retailer to prove that the fault wasn't there at the time of delivery - it's not up to you to prove that it was. "

Unfortunately for you, this is the dustcart after the lord mayors show, but Silverline tools really are the worst tacky tools in the WORLD. I can can order tools from them for clients, but I always steer customers to Bahco.
Toolstream are a bunch of nobeads.

They do a mean line in powerboats

I have a set of imperial spanners and a socket set from Silverline and they have been great with daily industrial use. I bought them in a hurry one day when I needed imperial tools and had left mine at base. I bought them expecting to last the job but five years later they're still good. I did warranty claim a socket as there were two 32mm instead of one 32mm and one 1"1/4. They sent out the new socket by return of post after filling out an online form.
However, having seen some of their power tools I would avoid them (power tools) like the plague. Generic Chinese white label guff.

Happy with the Silverline sander polisher but it is only used for polishing the hull topsides once every 3 or 4 years. If it works OK this year then it will have done all I ever wanted of it.

No problems either with the compact angle grinder. Bought for one specific job but used on one or two other occasions too. Probably aso in effect done all I'll ever want of it.

In both cases spending several times as much money would have been money wasted.

Write to them stating that unless you get a refund within 14 days you will issue a claim in the Small Claims Court ans point out that for you to attend you will claim for a days wages, court costs etc. That should wake them up.
