I have sailed as crew on an Oyster. On that basis I'd chose the HR.

I chose an Oyster 49................................ I would have no hesitation in crossing an ocean in her

Both capable and beautifully built, one is a an out and out centre cockpit and one is a sort of deck saloon.

The only Centre Cockpit i've sailed was a Westerly Oceanmaster, did a round the Island trip and mucked around the solent.
Kept me nice and dry, very pleasant.

The only Centre Cockpit i've sailed was a Westerly Oceanmaster, did a round the Island trip and mucked around the solent.
Kept me nice and dry, very pleasant.

I sailed my centre cockpit Westerly Corsair across the Atlantic and did 12,000 miles in my Moody 38. Both were great.

Ah a Corsair, I forgot those, I chartered one of those a couple of times from a place on Hamble Point Marina. The name escapes me now but that was a nice boat.

Oyster - very fine bow & extremely wet.

Had interesting experience with a 49' Oyster, heading into wind on way down from Cadiz to Gib. Big green ones came straight over the bow, dumped onto those nice big windows & then bounced & dumped onto the helm - me!

Even in lower wind conditions, that fine bow will ensure that the side decks are wet, all the way back past the cockpit.

The big windows always scared me, in spite of being 'bombproof. They were dogged shut with screw type dogs that could be tightened, tightened & tightened - how much of this 'localised' stress they could take was unknown, but didn't seem right.

Otherwise they sail well & everything you need to attend to underfloor, is tagged, making things easier. Oysters look good, particularly in a marina, but if I were spending my own money, I'd go for a HR. I've sailed those in heavy weather & felt secure in the centre cockpits, which seem deeper than most.

The smaller newer HRs (31', 34' 37') are aft cockpit boats.
