Hi,

Can anybody shed some light on the Oyster 34 (1979 vintage)re performance, comfort for 4 people coastal cruising, single-handing suitability, good points, weaknesses, etc
many thanks,
Gerry

Steven Jones 3/4 tonner. 7/8 rig with in-line spreaders + runners and checks. A nice looking boat which needs rail fodder to perform at her best.

Used to race against one called Act of Defiance. Usually managed to beat it in my Contessa 33. NB: 33 not a 32! I'm sure Act of Defiance is out of the water at Gosport Boatyard.

Actually, it was a Gary Mull design. Oyster took the design used in Peter Clements' one-off "Carronade" and sold it as the Oyster 34. Only one built I think - 'Starry Night'.

Carronade, btw, completed the 1979 Fastnet.

The SJ boats were early eighties.

I have an oyster 34 [simply red] as far as i know there were 3 of this model built in 1979.One being[ westend girl ] the other [starry night].I am club racing could anyone tell me the py number of this boat.

In the hope that others out there are still looking for similar info as i am, i would like to add to that above by Boguing. Oyster Marine did build a 34, which is completely different to the UFO34 which is a Kim Holman design from the early '70's. The Oyster 34 is properly attributed to Gary Mull. He was a prolific American designer heavily involved in IOR. The Oyster 34 was a production version of a Gary Mull designed one-off 3/4 tonner called Carronade owned by Peter Clements, a friend of Richard Matthews. It was the first example of the wide beam retrousse transom that became dominant in IOR and was effectively copied in the hugely successful Oyster 37 and the 41 that followed.

We now own Kyria Tria which is hull no. 2 of what we believe to be 2 of 6 made in total. The hull was built in 1979 by Brigland Moulders Norfolk, and then fitted out by Landamore Wroxham Norfolk. We would be very interested to track down the other owners, or any info relating to them. I have also attached the official brochure which we received from Oyster marine via the previous owner.

I am the owner of a Oyster 34 as described above. I bought it in 1990 from previous owner who had it new in 1979. The yacht is located in Oslo, Norway.

Hi Dan
Please see the attached. I’ve done quite a bit of research on this model, even met with Oyster as they no longer had records of this when Oyster Marine went into administration, later becoming Oyster Yachts. People also think this is a similar/same version of the UFO 34 - which it is not, it’s a different boat all together.

Do you know what hull number yours is, and which yard made it? I know from speaking with Landamore that they only ever fitted out ours, hull no.2. The shell was built by Brigland who also went into administration.

These six 34’s which Oyster Marine made are the slightly smaller version of the 37’ Sailing Florence, very popular you tube sailing channel, worth a look if your not aware of them.

Hi Shaney

Thanks for getting back to me with the information, been struggling to find anything, so much appreciated.
Can’t say I’ve seen anything, will get back to you once I’ve had a look.
Yea I do watch them as it goes, Florence also an oyster?

I'm the current owner of "Simply Red". She's been up on the hard for a few years now due to long term water ingress through the deck hull joint and a large number of other issues but I am slowly rebuilding her.

I don't suppose anyone still has this official brochure as I'd love to see it

What year?

Did Oyster not have the best reputation and then go through a few years (with a change of location of builder) some time just after the early 2000’s and receive substantially poor build reviews.

I think the build quality increased subsequently.

My memory fails to give dates of changes.
