Hello chaps. Would anyone know where I might get hold of some Oxalic acid crystals to clean up the teak on me boat? Have tried local chemists but they are no longer allowed to supply in case I do a Norman Bates on me mum.....

Look up your local Yellow Pages for Chemicals supplier - such as the type that supply school labs etc.. Only trouble is that you have to buy a 1/2 kilo or more at a time.
Was the only place I could get it, so have enough for a lifetime - but the results were worth the effort.

Why not try NETROL available from Crown Decorator Shops. Easy to use, very effective. Designed to deep clean teak garden furniture. I've used once a season on teak laid decks with no ill effects to the boat or myself!

Regards,

As always 'do your own research'. The opinion expressed here is a personal one and is not to be taken as a definitive answer.

You might find a local furniture restorer/repairer willing to sell you a small quantity and also advise on use and dilutions.

I've used "Patio Cleaner" from B&Q with good results on both wood & gel coat to remove growth/stains. Brush on, leave for a while then hose off. I think it's about £4 for 10L.

There's an oxalic acid based gel designed for cleaning gelcoat called Y10. It brings up tired gelcoat wonderfully, but it also cleans teak. Suspect it might be a more expensive option than crystals, though.

FWIW I usually use two heaped table spoons of crystals in half a pint of water and it seems to work OK.

When I'm using it in wallpaper paste (I prefer it this way; it stays on the surface to do its work rather than just flowing away) I mix a very thick paste then add the crystals. The paste need to be thick as the crystals seem to thin it down.

Wonderful stuff. Wear rubber gloves, avoid splashes and paint it on to the surface.

A Book called Hull and Deck repair suggests AJAX scouring powder which is one tenth (approx) the price of Teak Deck cleaner containing oxalic acid. The only thing I don't know, is if AJAX scouring powder is still sold! If not in supermarkets, perhaps it is in older style hardware shops!

In the last few weeks i have bought three lots at three different chemist shops. Maybe you just have to shop around.

You have been misled by your local chemist. Oxalic Acid is listed in the Poison Rules as a Part 1 poison and can therefore be supplied to a legitimate user known to a local pharmacy. The poisons register will require completion. He can obtain Oxalic Acid from J.M.Loveridge plc, Southampton and probably other sources.

Always use a concentrated solution ie fill a bottle with hot water and add oxalic acid crystal until no more will dissolve. If you want a gel add wallpaper powder.
About its toxicity, so is antifouling etc etc Wear gloves and don't drink it.

Scouring powders like AJAX or VIM are not a good idea. The bleach in them won't work on rust, so to clean you have to scour the surface away. Not only hard work, but it will leave a matt surface that spoils GRP gloss and quickly attracts dirt. By comparison, oxalic acid effectively dissolves the rust, leaving the surface unaffected.
