Has anyone tried making Oxalic Acid (for hull cleaning) from Rhubarb leaves?

Well I'm giving it a go!!

I assume just cut them up & boil / simmer to extract the liquid - using a small amount of water.

Oh well here goes.

Have a look at http://www.rhubarbinfo.com. It might give you some idea of how much oxalic acid you can expect to get. It could well be that the cost of buying the stuff will be less than the cost of extracting it from the rhubarb and concentrating the extract to a useful level.

Re: Rhubarb....It can be delicious

I can't say it was something I enjoyed as a child (we grew a little in the garden) and I didn't like crumble either but after taking early retirement I worked in a local school for a few years. One lunchtime I tried the rhubarb crumble that was on offer. It was delicious (we did have an exceptionally good canteen) and after that I always had it whenever it was on the menu. Unfortunately I have not been able to persuade swmbo to make it.

There's been a few threads about this recently. If you do a search then you should find your answer.

When I needed some my chemist got a tub of it in for me. It took a couple of days to come in from his wholesalers.

Y10 is fine if you want to pay £10 for a small tub of dillute acid from a swindlery.

My mum used to make a sort of tea from rhubarb leaves. The resultant liquid was strong enough to kill greenfly (and probably everything else) on her roses but it would only have been suitable for cleaning a dark green boat.
