Owners Associations

In the Moody Owners Association we have an excellent website and forum, technical library, quarterly glossy magazine, regional and national events ranging from pub evenings to cross channel cruises.

All this for only £20pa which can easily be recovered through discounts with some suppliers - i got 10% off a sprayhood and cockpit tent.

Looking at one or two others, their websites have very little useful information, nothing about events and somewhat dormant forums.

What do forumites think of their Owners Associations ?

I would heartily say that if contemplating a new used boat, the owners assoc is the No 1 place to start reading and understanding what you are getting in to before looking at boats.

They do seem to rely heavily on the efforts of one tireless editor/publisher though to make them buzz and to tirelessly prod members to keep contributing their effort and experiences..

When I had a Corribee, under the indefatigable Jean Cook's efforts ( she also organised the Island Sailing Clubs newsletter, IIRC, it was a really positive experience to be a member.
Great to see the COA back in business, SRP .

The same with the current R36, although interestingly two developments have emerged. One, a renewed interest by the factory to become involved which has sorted an annual dinner at the Southampton boatshow-clever as attendance should be high, and new boats are on hand to generate more interest and discussion etc.
Secondly, the ROA has gone electronic, so each member has their own webpage with links to regional/other members and archives etc. Should reduce the load on one editor and stimulate more spontaneous input by members..maybe.

Currently a member of 2 Associations. Having sold our Cobra 850 a couple of months back, still members of the Cobra/Seawolf owners Association and now also a member of the Hurley Owners Association.

Observations?

The Cobra/Seawolf web site benefits from an in built forum, but suffers from a surprising lack of activity.

The Hurley Owners Association is obviously very active with lots of meetings through the season, BUT suffers from a Yahoo Groups extension which is IMHO absolutely DIRE!

At the end of the day an owners association will be as beneficial to the owners as they wish it to be! Pro-active owners will always make a lively association!

Hello John...ex Endymion....

Anticipating value for money is key.
I was the co-founder of the Cobra/seawolf website which was free. It had a very active forum for a while but then it went quiet and another member was given control but he charges for it , and it is quieter still now.

I can't see why people charge for membership of a website of that nature. You can run one for nothing. If you want to make some money get some ads on the site. If it's because you begrudge the time, don't do it.

On my third boat and thus my third class association, other than dinghy ones from my rcing days. They have all been worthwhile and worth the little money they cost.
