Okeedokkee.. trying to plan ahead...

The thing about liveaboard life is its making me understand my priorities and desires much more clearly...I'd like to spend somewhere next winter which has most of the following:

* safe place weather wise (I may be on my own, and may not want to have to move boat by myself in bad weather, so probably marina)
* moderate in price- doesnt have to be very cheap, if other things compensate for the higher price)
* easy access to good walking in hills/mountains - either on foot or by hire car (or shared car with residents): this is very important to me, I'm discovering (If I had to choose between walking in mountains and sailing it would be the former, but hopefully I will not need to choose)
* a community of other people actually living on board over winter (not just leaving their boat there)- ideally including some people who may be interested in more "alternative" lifestyles, and not just sitting in bars drinking.
* dog friendly bars (or one or two)
* beautiful places within easy reach: not just arid scrub (will put up with more rain to have more green and varied scenery)

We haven't actually spent more than 6 weeks in one place this winter. Of the places we've stayed a little while:

Guardiana: loved it- but walking a bit limited and boring after a while (very same-y countryside)

Lagos: not enough "alternative" in the atmosphere- struck me as a place where lots of people left boats permanantly- maybe a little staid in some way.. not "me"

Almerimar: Much better- probably for the reason that we are near to the Sierra Nevada and Alpujarras, and Cabo de Gata and I've done some lovely walks and refreshed my soul! There's an active walking group; friendly "flatties"(ex yachties) with cars, bars friendly to dogs etc.

The plan for this year is to go to the Balearics, Sardinia and probably either Sicily or Corsica - then either hotfoot it to the Ionian or back to Spain (or stay in Sardinia)

Sardinia looks like it has good walking- but are there good places with active liveaboard communities and the equivalent of the "flatties" here in almerimar (or cheap car hire)?

Levkas or Messolonghi- the former appeals more for some reason (is Messy rather isolated?). Does Levkas have a good live over winter community?

I have ruled out Malta (too dry and arid, having spent a couple of weeks there and on Gozo and done some walking: 2 weeks is enough!)

Any thoughts?

Carol

Suggest you look at Gouvia on Corfu. Ticks most of your boxes. Good walking on the island, which is much larger than it looks and easy access to the mainland by ferry for longer expeditions. There is an eclectic liveaboard community as well as a significant land based ex pat population. Downside is that it is cold and wet in the winter and no direct flights to UK until April.

Levkas has a good year round population, but perhaps less shored based outdoor activities. Messolonghi is remote but there should be feedback from thos who overwintered this year - first with a marina.

Corsica?

No idea about overwintering (the marina at Bonifacio seemed sheltered, but not teeming with life at Easter), but the hiking is fabulous!

We wintered the boat afloat at Bastia, Port Toga. Reasonably lively place when we visited, supermarket nearby, walk to the ferry, 20 minutes to the airport. Some very strong winds at times. Early booking necessary, we were the last accepted in the previous June. Several liveaboards there all winter.

Hmmm. Interesting dilemna which I faced a few years ago.

It seems to be a choice between an ex-pat community, which means a group of people living well within their comfort zones (Almerimar, Gouvia, Levkas, Marmaris, Lagos).

Or a middle of the road alternative where the nationalities are more mixed, but there's still a big local live aboard community (Estepona, Ostia, Cagliari, Ostia, Kalamata, Kos)

Or the local community options, which Greece excels in: un-developed marinas which provide great shelter, very limited services, great little local towns. trivial costs. Examples; Syros, Ermoupolis marina; Pylos marina; Preveza marina. No electricity, no services, but super local towns. The whole experience may be well beyond most live aboard comfort zones, but offers wonderful welcoming local colour and some superb local exploring.

I now spend my summers in Messinia (Peloponese) after many years of cruising Europe as a live aboard. For a good reason. The surrounding countryside, with the odd session of (very cheap) car hire offers a lot. And the weather factor so far south is good.

Kalamata is a good marina, all facilities, which will give you a couple of exciting days/nights during the winter when big southerlies roll in. But the town is great - 50,000 population, real Greece, only a few Brits around, but a few internationals to make life interesting. Or Pylos, with a wonderfully sheltered (undeveloped) marina and a really neat little town of 3,000 people which stays alive over winter; no significant live aboard community, but a welcoming town. Nearby national parks are reachable with a day sail - 3nm across the bay. Watch wintering flamingoes, Lamergaier falcons and an very wide range of seabirds. Many walks - to waterfalls, or hill top castles wit fabulous views.

Enough English is spoken locally to communicate. But this is outside many people's comfort zone; explorers territory. I love it.

For the same reasons, Almerimar is not for me; I have a strong preference to enjoying the local culture, rather than searching out a British culture. Sso, to make a choice, so much depends on your need for local community . . . it's not possible to advise really. Depends whether you love strange environments, or prefer community.

Like anchors - everyone will recommend their own choice. They've learnt to live with it, and it's their way. I love off-beat wintering spots. Others don't.

Have just spent winter in Messolonghi and although a building site, which we all knew before choosing to stay here, we have had a fantastic winter. The town and people are brilliant, lots to see and do, lagoons to walk around and if you like bird life its even better. For us the price this winter was just over a thousand euros for seven months, although I believe the prices may rise for this coming winter.

Be warned that the building works will continue next winter as there is still another big building to come but the facilities are here and I would recommend it to anyone that accepts you pay for what you get!!!

Sadly we are leaving the Ionion and heading west so we are looking to winter in Sardinia and will be reading avidly the replies to your requests about possible wintering there.

We've been in Yasmine Hammamet marina in Tunisia for two winters. Admittedly we don't live aboard but there are plenty who do. It ticks pretty much all of your boxes and you can walk over Roman history within an hour's drive.
Prices are also very attractive compared with Euroland.
We wintered in Almerimar so I'm aware of the community there. http://www.portyasmine.com.tn/

Excellent idea!

Spending a winter in a peaceful island, is really a dream. Complete serenity...

What I had done during my youth (with no kids and work...) is move to corfu for a winter.

There I had made some friends with which we were hopping on several islands that were nearby ( i recall taking coffee, and browsing through our phones www.goferry.gr, booking a ferry e-ticket and boarding right away!!)

So apart from books etc, have a 3G phone with you...

Carol, if you are thinking about Sardinia we were there 15 years ago and one of the marinas was UKP75 per night, water and electricity extra. I dread to think what Puerto Cervo is but I think they won't take anything less than 80 feet length, maybe more.

Somebody mentioned Corfu. It may fulfill your requirements in that there is a lot of hill walking and stunning views. It gets lots of rain in the winter so it's a green island. Don't know about bars/dogs though. Does anybody else know?

Woof to Skye.

Carol has Skye, Tunisia is not EU nor one of the 'approved' countries. So unless Carol will be spending at least 6 months back in EU territory + not needing any booster shots for Skye then it would be a problem. :(

Errrm. What on earth is Skye? Is it contagious? Should I avoid people who have it? And what's the 'woof' association?

A dog, Flatcoat Retriever called Skye!!!

IF Carol wants to take him back to UK then my comments stand. If not, then it's not a problem. Although the 6 months (ie not been out side qualifying EU countries) rule does apply for some Caribbean Islands.

TNT, we are headed to Cagliari for this coming winter and would love any information on anchorages around the area, prices, costs, distance to town etc. and any contact information you may have for the marina you mention.

LOL!!! SKYE as a contagious disease? well there are those that have met him that would agree, as he is very loveable!

I've been off line (in roquetas del mar doing antifouling etc.. but now all ready to move on to Cartagena... hurray- here comes summer!) so havent responded until now...

Anyway, back to the point.. thank you for all these helpful suggestions. JimB, you have set me a-thinking further about what I want. Whilst (in my heart) I would dearly love to stay in an out of the way place without the uk expat bias, in my head I know that might be not suitable- I'll be by myself, in all probability (other than Skye the contagious disease, of course:-))and don't want to be too lonely.... and also I'm not a hugely experienced boat owner, so appreciate other people around to help if I get into difficulty. Maybe not the big expat places, but somewhere with a community of winter liveaboards.

I want to write, paint, walk and generally have a creative time next winter, as well as maybe meet like minded souls... not just drinking and bars, but wider interests. somewhere beautiful or in easy reach of the beautiful... i need to feed my soul and not be in a concrete jungle! (I easily get marina malaise....hence the hopping this winter!)

Hi Carol, lucky you to have had all the work finished so quickly. We are still STUCK in Almerimar and can't wait to get away. Unfortunately are still waint for parts to arrive and be fitted.

Do keep in touch via this live aboard link.It was great to have met you and the mad hound.
