Overwintering between Gijon and Baiona

We stopped fairly late on 3rd August and had to pay 49.07 Euro for 12.6 x 4.1m and WiFi didn't work.

It wasn't possible to anchor as it was a big spring tide and we couldn't find anywhere with enough depth at LW (out of tidal stream). So we paid up but left early the next day to avoid another 50 Euro bill. Viviero was a great next stop with free anchorage and cheap marina.

We did consider it a rip-off but were tired after a pretty long sail and didn't want to go back out into a lumpy sea with darkness coming fairly soon. Better to bite the bullet and just add it to my list of places to avoid.

I stopped in Ribadeo..1 night...14/1/2012,boat...11.56x3.56metres...19 euros, wifi was working. It was winter and thus cheaper!!

We stopped in Ribadeo in May last year, was taken aback when the guy asked for €44 per night by far the moat expensive place we stopped.

We walked to the office to pay with a French guy who berthed next to us at about the same time, nice guy, took our lines etc but when confronted with €44 per night he got very angry, accused them of being robbers and promptly left......we only stayed one night.

I'm currently out of the water in Vigo ( Punta La Goa). It doesn't seem to me that this is the best place for live aboards, but for wintering the boat protection is good, rates are good, staff are helpful, competent and there is good facilities other than the temporary toilets. There is another boat there (Irish) which has been wintering there for several years. Connections to Santiago de Compostela or Coruña Airports are easy with a direct train from Vigo as is local airport.

PM if you would like some details.

What are rates like for 6 months out of the water at Lagoa (and daily rates as well)? My pilot book said that they were thought to be 2x other local rates.

Someone else had a comment in another thread (will try to find it again) about a marina in Vigo. They said that they paid 50 Euro overnight + 24 Euro for an oversize power connector and that facilities were very poor. I thought that this might be Lagoa as rate tied up with pilot book. Could just be an error in pilot book (never happens of course!!!!) and someone with a grudge.

Good to get info from someone there as we are in the area.

Not too important though as I've pretty much settled on Vilanova for storage ashore. Trying to organise a "group discount" with a couple of other boats. Might work and benefit us all, nothing to lose by asking.

Cancel that, just dropped into Punta LaGoa yesterday and prices seemed reasonable (around 26 Euro for 12m). I think that included tax and they said it was same all year around.

I know that Marina Davila is around 34 Euro mark and Club Nautico was similar. A friend has just put his in Moana for around18 Euro (might be going there for a bit).

So still puzzled about mystery marina near Vigo charging rates claimed (really must find the thread).

UPDATE: Found it at last. It was something I saw on Noonsite and it mentioned Baiona by name.

I was thinking of visiting Baiona next week. Anyone know if it is as bad as described in the link above?

Still in Lagoa? did you get all the info you need? I was in Baiona, but there didn't seem to be much shore space. Understood from a local that Vilanova was renewing their lease and it was unclear if their permit would be extended. Could be vicious rumours, but didn't want to take the chance of a mid winter move.

If in Lagoa, would appreciate a look around to confirm everything looks ok.

Good luck.

No, only popped in to check out Punta Lagoa prices. Everything looked calm and I had a look at a 49DS (think I met the owner in Portugal) and a 42DS. We were meeting some people at Marina Davila so didn't stay in Punta Lagoa.

I heard similar stories about Vilagarcia so perhaps there is a problem there. I was told that Vilagarcia would be OK though. It could be either or neither but I heard about possible Vilagarcia problem from 2 sources.

I've heard some sort of story about almost every yard we've considered. I guess business problems are just getting to be common with the state of Spain's economy.

Not certain if we are going to stay in Punta Lagoa overnight but will be in Galicia until near end of October. PM your boat name and anything you want checked and I'll see if we can get in. Security seems reasonable there because we'd agreed to met some people to check prices. Office was closed and guard wouldn't let them into the marina. We arrived about 15mins. later but they'd started walking back back to Marina Davila.

So might just get thrown out if we stop for 30mins. to "look at a boat".

We've settled on Marina Davila for winter and will cruise around Ria de Arousa etc. until closer to time for lift out.

Went to Baiona and tried the Montereal YC at suggestion of someone I met in Vigo. Comments on noonsite specifically said the adverse remarks mentioned weren't for this marina.

I went into the marina and was directed to a pontoon finger and then went off to fill in forms at office. A little later I realised that I hadn't checked the prices so went back to office.

Turned out to be more than 60 Euro and seeing my look of horror they offered to give the 12m rate of only 48 odd Euro. We politely said no thanks and would leave immediately. Nice enough people but price was silly (but market forces rule I suppose).

We anchored in the bay, holding was good and access to the town was easy. Result.

I checked the other marina and it was about 44 Euro (but I could get 10% reduction with receipt from Combarro). Cheaper but I was happy in the bay. It looks as if this is the marina with the poor review in noonsite. However, I think it has changed hands and WiFi is free now. Can't comment on power connectors but did did see an adapter on sale for 29 Euros (price mentioned in noonsite). Showers were a bit poor as well (portacabin).

Next time I'm in Baiona my preferences will be:

1) Anchor
2) Cheaper marina (& try for 10% discount)
3) Yacht club (but only if I can get a cheaper Med. style berth)

High season seems to extend to end of Sept. here so option 1 is really the only one unless weather is pretty bad.

Spent a week at anchor in Baiona, very safe and fairly easy access by dinghy. Did make the mistake of leaving the dinghy at the marina once(in a place that did not impede any boats) but was quickly told to leave.

thanks....

Just to round this off - I left the boat in Gijon in the end...... looks like good security (couldn't get onto the pontoon myself to start with - bad keycard); inner-inner marina so very protected; in the water through the winter so good for visits; Lively town which doesn't hibernate. Can't actually recommend it yet but i'll try to remember to post in the spring. As usual, thanks to all for v. helpful info!
