I know it's a bit far north to be popular but I may have to cut short this years saunter down to the Med and leave the boat NW -ish Spain...... can anyone recommend a good spot? I'm not bothered about nightlife/noise because I won't be aboard.... much.

Gijon is covered in the N Spain page from right hand menu. Note there's a recently commissioned marina NW of Gijon town; better value.
 
Just past Bayona in Portugal you will find the cheapest marina in Povoa de Varzim. They have good haul out and hard standing. A good few liveaboards and excellent social scene. Easy metro to nearby airport. Good security and excellent marina staff. Highly recommended for leaving the boat ashore.
 
Two of the boats we met on the way down last year laid up in Viviero (ashore) and one in A Coruna (in the water). If you plan on visiting then transport to and fro becomes a factor - Viviero has a limited bus service even in summer.

My vote for 2 options:
Spain - Marina La Coruna / Marina Seca: they have great services in hardstand: www.marinaseca.com

Portugal - Madeira Island - Yes it's far from spain - 5 days sailing, but a short crossing with NE prevailing winds and you will be in the Atlantic.

either one or the other I know that you will be in good hands.

Talking to a chap in Vianho week before last who keeps his boat in Povoa and he told me he has the boat taken out whenever he leaves it, as surge/swell eats his lines and fenders and suffered multi dings first time he left it. I've only overnighted a few times and can only comment on difficulty of berthing there solo and was grateful for the help from lads ashore.

Not a clue as to where to leave a boat wintering,
but there is a ferry link by LD lines from Gijon to St. Nazaire, which I have used to advantage when travelling to Salamanca.A good night's sleep on a nice new fairly basic ship.Fares were reasonable too!
Mostly trucks, about 6 cars.
May be useful info.

I think the OP mention he wanted his boat taken out in which case most of the other stuff is irrelevant.. only that there is good links here to a nearby airport and it is cheap for haul out and storage.
We together with numerous other boats have been here a month (leaving Sat) and the surge in that time is no different to a lot of places.What thy are good at here is giving you a double berth so you can tie from both fingers thereby holding yourself off. It also depends on how you tie up but I would advise anyone on the Atlantic to have those rubber stretchy things.
The men here are excellent at seeing and helping anyone in to the berths.

Happy to leave her in - prefer it in fact as Ihope to pop back around end Oct - so afloat is OK..... thanks for the suggestions so far. I was considering Povoa but it seems risky - or am I being too cautious?

I have not ben down this coast in late October/ November so I cannot comment. They do have a policy of taking the larger boats out of th water for winter and smaller boats can stay further in where there is a lot less swell in bad weather. Don.t know the size of your boat or for how long you want to leave it but a 36 ft is approx 1500 a year I think including haul in/ out.
 
The swell gets in everywhere as the winter gets going and after lows have passed there are several days of quite heavy moving abouton marina moorings.I keep my boat ashore as I live along way away even so ashore with news of a storm its difficult not to dwell on what the wind might be doing to the boat or cover.Personally I would go for being ashore and with the mast down and in a steel cradle.Ventilation that works without leccy and that will circulate air well is a must.There is a yard in Cangas in the ria de Vigo that previous sailers seemed happy with the service and safty whilst they where in the uk.
 
portasin at top end of ria de muros may tick the boxes and should be far enough up river to be away from swell - pleasant and secure enough place and friendly club

The entrance was pretty lumpy when we went to Ribadeo. The marina also had a little swell in the pontoon at the entrance and the place seemed pretty full. We paid almost 50 Euro for 12 hours and WiFi didn't work either.

We couldn't find anywhere suitable to anchor in the bay (big spring tide & we draw 2.15m).

Perhaps we were unlucky but I've made a note to avoid it if at all possible.

However, Viviero was great and we spent a few days there at anchor and another couple in the marina.
 
don't know what size you are but seems at 50 euros for 12 hours you got ripped off - very odd - paid 35 to overnight in coruna and thought that was a sting

I stopped in Ribadeo..1 night...14/1/2012,boat...11.56x3.56metres...19 euros,wifi was working.It was winter and thus cheaper!!
