Oversized anchor shackle won't fit through bowroller - what to replace with?

Hi all

I replaced my 16kg CQR with a 20kg CQR thanks to the For Sale section on YBW.

I found that the oversized shackle on the 20kg CQR (70mm) is too wide for the bowroller (54mm).

Shackles on Jimmy Green seem either too large for the bowroller or too small for the shank (23mm). The previous 16kg had no shackle and had been replaced with a Kong connector. I think I might need to do the same, unless I'm missing something obvious?

A swivel connected directly to the anchor shank is NOT recommended as it can fail under side load - so would need to find a suitable shackle of some form

I’m informed by other people here, that the apparently oversized shackle is very much a part of a CQR. I’m not sure what you do about your problem, but to get the most out of a CQR, you need that oversized shackle. I am not the authority to quote though. I don’t have a CQR or a bow roller.

And even if you did cut off the large shackle and connected a Kong directly to the anchor, the 23mm shank would direct you to the 12-14mm size, which might seem a bit steep for spending on a 2nd hand anchor.

Thanks all - afraid the CQR shackle has to go. Good to know regarding the lateral loads - from Vyv's article, I saw reference to a Wichard Self-Locking shackle that avoids a protruding pin.

Guess I just need to find one that is wider than the shank but narrower than the bow roller...

EDIT: Seems that the 12mm Wichard has a B = 24mm and G = 49mm, which doesn't leave much wiggle-room in the 54mm bow roller but may suffice.

You can also use a conventional galvanised shackle and cut off the head of the pin.

I do this to streamline the shackle even though room is not critical in my case. I usually leave a small amount of the head of the pin protruding and drill a small hole in this. This allows the shackle to be moused and it can still be undone with some vice grips.

Threadlock is necessary if you cut the head off completely, but not if drill a small hole and leave a bit of the head as shown in the pictures. The small hole enables mousing. The head of the shackle is still streamlined enough not to catch on anything.

Consider using a large rigging toggle and appropriately sized galvanised Class 10 galvanised bolts. The bolt that retains the chain need to fit the chain, obviously. You can buy (at least in Oz) Class gal 10 bolts in any decent hardware store. You can chamfer the heads to thin the length of the bolt - but try to keep as much of the nut and head as possible.

If the right hand bolt is still too big, cut it short but leave enough thread (again - obviously) and you can grind the head and the nut to 'sort of' dome shaped to better slide through the bow roller.

Do not use Interscrews as shown in the photo - they are not strong enough. Use the biggest toggle possible and then you will have sufficient steel to impart the strength (it will need to be quite big to fit on the end of the CQR shank). If you know any friendly riggers they probably have spare toggles from replaced rigging.

Plastimo Galvanised Anchor Connector is said to be suitable for use with articulated shank anchors - like CQR.
I notice some people are using Maillon Rapide Chain Link to connect to their anchor. These are available in all sizes up to impossibly big.
