Overnight Security - Whilst Onboard

There were 15+ boats broken into here in Waterford a few weeks ago, electronics stolen, boats vandalised and at least one attempt to cut a cruiser opposite us loose, we live aboard, when they tried to board us I yelled having previously called the police, the scum took off but I was able to guide the police to them and they were arrested, an hour later I saw another scumbag, called the police again and they caught him. While identifying this one I spotted another two over the road watching, it,s 3.30.a.m. by now. The police nabbed them so it wasn,t a bad haul. They spent two nights in the pokey and were charged. Sadly in a way, they were Polish guys, sad for the many good ones working here. But we still don,t lock up at night. The only time I had anything nicked in 30 odd years,(touch wood) was in La Cediera, North Spain and that was by French Yotties

In warmer places where I sleep with all the hatches open I sometimes rig some dark coloured fishing line across the gaps.. fix one end tight to the side and the other round something attached to empty beer cans, saucepan on the edge of a shelf..... If the line is pushed then the cans or pan falls making considerable noise = hopefully scaring the thief and awaking me.

Has worked as a superb deterrent so far!

fishing line to rape alarms stuck to inside of hatches, they costa few pounds each so we had one on each open hatch and one on the deck. I only used them in some rougher or quieter places Venezuela, Trinidad and some island harbours where we were moored bow or stern to in port areas that were a bit remote. I was happy that anyone moving a hatch or climbing in would set one off and wake us...scare them.

They are loud in a confined space, and are the size of a match box.
