I might go to Solva next week with son in his CO32. Neither of us have tied up to a drying wall before and with HW at midday we might settle for a lunch stop at the quay and anchor the other side of the rock unless it's blowing westerly.

Anyone been there - any comments?

I'm smiling here Roger. I dried out against the wall at Solva on my Dayskipper practical with Pembrokeshire cruising in based at Neyland. It was a few years ago now but I do remember a couple of good pubs a shortish walk from the quay. There is a hoop in the wall (up a flight of stairs if I remember correctly) that we tied a halyard to (that was my job) to stop her falling over. I would love to go back to that place. A lovely place. There again, a lovely pub can turn anywhere into a lovely place /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

not been to solva but recently anchored in an idyllic spot - south haven at skomer. very well protected from the north / east, full of puffins and seals, and with lots of crabs and lobbies if you are interested in fishing.

Hi Roger,

Yes I've done it - though the old bucket of water off the halyard (fractional rig) didn't give us enough (any?) lean - ended up with a bit of scrambling to fix two ropes at chest height to the mast at about 90 degrees to each other to control the lean - with that in place we were happy for a couple of tides - if a little bow down (half in the trench dug by a long keeler the night before)

Not looked at the tides - but I guess if its mid day HW its neaps - if anchoring in the pool you need to be nearer to the outer rocks than you might think - or at least nearer than I thought - never mind - rising tide and all !

Otherwise as others have said - plenty of other options - Skomer (N or S Haven), Little haven if the wind is still in the E - even Ramsay Island tucked just behind the bitches.

I'm sure Luke knows most of these anyway - have fun

I hanchored there a couple of years ago just inside the harbour entrance, with the intention of staying afloat. EdBeynon did the tide calculations - alas for the wrong day. At low water we were just touching the bottom, and that's with a 40cm draft, so there's not a lot of water there.

A grumpy fisherman told me that I was in the way anchoring where I had and that I wasn't allowed to. The friendly harbour master disagreed, and told me to ignore him. Said that it was his harbour, not the fisherman's.

Umm - lovely spot I agree - but its a Marine Reserve (which of course is part of the reason its still a lovely spot) - so it would be nice to save your lobster and crab fishing for elsewhere (unless you happen to be a commercial fisherman - but thats another debate I don't wish to get into ...)

Plenty of spots outside the marine reserve for fishing...

Probably get labelled a raving greenie for this post - but hey ho

Thanks

Ah - that demonstrates by point I think - we draw 2m and you need to be tucked in really tight behind the rock to the right in the second photo to get the "pool" if I remember right - not much use if the wind swings round though ..
