Thanks everbody for the tips about my overheating Volvo 151. As initial thoughts pointed to the leg that was removed and all o rings and joints replaced. The inlet hose tested out to be ok. After all this still overheating but took a long time for temp to climb unless reving at 4k or above. Much investigation found the problem to be the water outlets of the exhaust manifold. All but one hole blocked. Cleaned and put back on and ok now. New manifold over the winter lay-up to be on the safe side.

Hi Neil,

You had better start saving now. I replaced mine on a 151 and at a very heavy discount (MMS before they ceased business) it still cost me £500. One thing you must do when it is off if it hasn't been done cleen the holes in the oil cooler.

By the way it would seem a lot of overheating on Volvo engines is caused by the manifold rotting out and when this happens often it feeds sea water into the number one cylinder and rots out the port and valves and can then feed water down into the cylinders and rot those out. Good design or what?

Thanks Dave for the tips. I took the trouble to clean everything while it was apart. Oil cooler, heat exchanger, all pipes and the manifold.
