Overheating hot to cold quickly

Going home the other day and temp climbed to about 100. Crept on in. Question; should I have stopped and cleaned the water trap (that was clogged) then, or do you wait for the engine to cool down first. Am thinking superhot engine suddenly having cold water in it. Thanks.
 
Ideally let it cool a bit but I would not loose any sleep over it, I used to test engines for a large manufacturer in Essex (Guess who)
one test was to run engines full load / full speed for 55 mins the shut down to idle with full cooling for 5 mins. A 1000 hours of that
soon found any weakness in the system !l
