There are too many choices in the Poll.
With my previous (big) boat, for the first three years, we kept her in commission on her mooring, sailing about every third weekend. The sailing was fine, but with us, it's all anchoring and using a dinghy, which isn't great in the cold, dark days of winter.

For the next 20 odd years, she was berthed in the Caledonian Canal during the winter. This meant that although we couldn't sail, we did have shore power, and could step off and on whenever we liked. It made maintenance much easier, and we tended to use her as a caravan in the winter, with summer sailing to look forward to.

Now, with a smaller, and more conventional boat, we winter ashore in a boatyard, which is safe, convivial, convenient, and makes maintenance even easier.

Which box should I tick?

Any/all but #1, #3# & #8 I would say!
Thanks for your response, and sorry for the multiple choice but I wondered what the general views are. It seems (so far) that more owners leave-in for winter use and convenience and also reckon boats are better in the water than in the hard.
Of course, these views do not represent those who must take-out for work, insurance and safety.

Sounds like your boat is at Caley Marina??

No, down nearer Oban. The yard where we winter now, is very sheltered, the owner insists on the use of cradles, and so with the exception of a few boats with very tall masts, we don't even have to take our masts down.

My insurance company insists that we are either ashore, or in a marina, in the winter months. Mind you, the nearest marina has in the past had all sorts of winter storm damage!

Thanks, and fair winds to you too.

East Coast Oz - d'you know my old mate William Darbishire near Brisbane? Australian Lung Foundation.

Just on the off-chance, one never knows!!

Hi Robert,

I do recall racing with a Fred Derbyshire (sp) of the Mackay Yacht Club, in the W.O.R.C. series of races and club racing.

Some years later he built a Thompson designed Cat and moved to Brisbane.

Good luck and fair winds. :)

PS. The A832 Achnasheen Highland IV22 2NG UK looks like a rugged bit of country.

Thanks to everyone for taking part and commenting.
It looks like convenience features higher ( both "in" and "out") but I'm pleased to see that the very greater proportion leave "in".
I'm not sure if the Poll should be stopped (and how to do that) or left for any future browsers of the fora.

Anyway, thanks for the responses, and good luck to all of you who are in the Thunder Storms area. OK up here at the mo, but looking wet for later. No wind at all, so grass cutting :grumpy::grumpy:.
