Over reliance on GPS

Each to his own, but out of interest, do you mark waypoints and then have manual pilotage notes as well .. in case the plotter fails?

Generally, we just use "Go to cursor" but sometimes it will be a route within the plotter.
If one of our plotters fail, we use another.
If all our (4) plotters fail, we use the PC which has video fed throughout the boat and is always on.
If that fails, we would use a tablet
If that fails, we would use one of the several mobile phones that we have on the boat.
If GPS itself failed, we would navigate using Radar
And right at the bottom of the list we would use a paper chart - remember at 25 knots, by the time you have plotted your position on a paper chart, you could be several miles away anyway.

I think thats enough redundancy - and thats much more than most other boats have.

That said, we ALWAYS keep a written log on paper that we physically write in - COG - SOG - Long - Lat - Log and time etc.
Every half hour, the electronic systems remind us that it is time to write a Log entry - in fact, the electronic systems "speak" the data to be logged.

LOL, you bet.
And you forgot to mention that JW also has an electronic compass (on top of another couple of magnetic ones, IIRC), connected to the a/p.
For the sort of navigation challenges that most of us in the Med deal with, the simpler thing to do if the gps fails is press the button "auto" rather than "track" on the a/p (or whatever, depending on the a/p brand), and come back to really critical issues, like sipping our gin tonic before the ice melts...
