OV to Shamrock

Saturday or Sunday I am going to try and take the boat out from OV up to Shamrock on my own. I'm feeling a little apprehensive and so is there anyone around Shamrock this weekend that could catch my lines for me as I attempt a solo berth?
Even more cheeky, a lift back to OV:encouragement:

Mdl marina staff will always take your lines, no begging needed, just a call ahead and check in again a few minutes before you arrive..
 
really are you sure you should take such a passage solo
why not ask a member of the marina staff to drive the boat for y0u
they make it look so easy when you have the wind and tide working against you
you can walk back in 15 mins

Absolutely!

First solo is always nervous but think it through, plan your lines and fenders, take it slow and enjoy! Strange sense of achievement when you have done!

Good shout Graham, will arrive at slack tide.How long do you generally get between the ebb and flow?
Its going to have to be next weekend now so hope the weather plays ball.
 
I would be comfortable with a 45 minute slot, try to arrive up the river outside Shamrock at the exact turn of the tide, gives you a bit of time to ensure you have someone on the dock ready for your lines.

Don't know if you have been there before, worth a drive up a couple of hours before you go so you can walk out onto your target berth and check the surroundings.

Also check the prevailing wind carefully, it makes such a difference there if you can use the wind to push you on to your berth.

With apologies for the thread drift could someone explain how this works in a bit more detail. Shortly moving to SQ and understood the times to avoid were approx half an hour either side of high and low water. Mooring allocated is close to the bank so probably more of an issue for me than those moored towards the ends of the piers.
 
My 42 foot Mobo was there for there for about 18 months, we did not have a bow thruster, my experience was that the best times to get in and out were the opposite to your belief.

As the tide approaches high tide, is slows for a while and then runs again, you must watch for this.

There is a period during the mid tide going in or out that you really do not want to try and berth, the tide flow just makes it too difficult on most berths in SQ.

I am happy to be corrected by those with more experience, I am now a happy Med boater at Sant Carles, probably a bad habit, but I never look at the Med tide tables.

Thanks Graham. I was told there was only a short period around each tide when mooring could be a problem. Any other info from those with experience of SQ.

One hour either side of Low or High water is fine. In shore berths less current but watch it at the entrance and enter up tide of flow. Spring Ebbs are quick but not as bad as some. Neaps are much more gentle and Two hours either side is ok too.


Russ, there's a good chance I'll be there to take lines. Don't depend on marina staff, they often do not answer vhf.

Thanks to all for the advise.
Its not the journey thats concerns me as said its only a stones throw away. Its the mooring up solo.

Looking at high water in my almanac, am i correct it will be HW at 1704 on Saturday 5th? Just that I have looked at various web sites and I,m getting 15.58, 15.25, 16.23 +1 hr BST.
Not sure if it will make that much difference to me but just poses the question why the big difference in times?
