I am considering buying a 1999 Diesel Powered Boat. It has a Volvo Diesel (150hp) with a Mercruiser Outdrive Leg. The photos of the outdrive leg show very little apart from it looking as if it has been painted all over with grey primer. As the boat is not too dear I wondered how much it would cost for a new/reconditioned outdrive leg, plus fitting.
Unfortunatly I dont live in the South Coast where boats outnumber cars, but in the Frozen North and it is a 600 mile round trip to go and have a look at it.
Plus as Boat Repairers are thin on the ground, if I did buy this or any other boat down there which needed work I would have it done down their.
PS. I am looking for a 21 -26ft Cabin Cruiser with an Inboard Diesel, preferably a "Planing Hull" if anyone has one for sale. Preferably 2002 onwards.

As outdrives cost from £1500+VAT (Merc copy) excluding the transom etc. replacing it just for the color might be a bad idea. The original Merc is black and the Volvo drives are white'ish or silver gray depending on year and model.

Somebody apparently decided to repower that boat from a Merc (petrol) to the Volvo diesel and kept the drive.

What budget do you have for the purchase? 21'-26' can be almost any price bracket.

Are you sure its that combination? never seen a volvo engined boat coupled to a merc leg, not really the right combination.

There is in cabin boatyard a bayliner with a yanmar 240 hp diesel coupled to a bravo 2 leg, though it states in the advert a volvo leg, the boats on hard standing and 100% its a merc leg.

A few coats of antifoul will soon have any leg looking like your description, what makes you think the leg needs changing, they all look like that eventually if boat in left in water all year round.
There are several firms around which will strip you leg back to aluminium and respray to nice shiny gloss, but as you will then have to paint it with cruddy matt A/F again you will be back where you started !

SORRY, you are right. The advert just says "Outdrive" I am on a learning curve, I have also noticed that some boats have "Duo-Props" which presumably are better. What sort of year did they come in and are there any types to avoid.
Although until recently I have had "Shaft Drive" in the 1970's I had a boat with Twin Volvo Outdrives and had no problem with them whatsoever, however things change.
