Outdrive Grief 290DP

The owner of this particular boat has over the years repaired several venerable outdrives, both his own and for others and has unwillingly been forced to aquire an intimate knowledge of the little bits and pieces that enable legs to go up and down, go in and out of gear and the various bits that can fail inside the leg.
All will soon be revealed.
Did once assist him a year or two ago, (make the tea) sorting a head gasket on a 41A. Impressive watching all the bits being stripped off, new gasket fitted with him spotting a couple of bent valve pushrods into the bargain.

First thing to do is remove the cover over the gear mechanism on the drive to see if the cable is actually pulling/pushing the mechanism in and out of gear or whether a split pin or the cable nipple has dropped off and it’s stuck in neutral.

Transom bearings seized.
Jack shaft snapped.
Damper plate disintegrated.
No planned preventative maintenance done, plus the jackshaft bearings in the bellhousing rumble when they are on the way out. Should have spotted it coming.

All sorted now.
Leg removed, new external jackshaft bearing fitted, yet another set of rubberware installed.
Engine of course had to be moved in order to extract collapsed internal bearing, only comes out from inside , new bearing fitted.

Replacement damper plate fitted.
Wonder who when designing the outdrive transom assembly decided that no method of greasing the two transom bearings was required.
Only needed a couple of simple drillings and the cost of a couple of grease nipples.

Fortunately the skipper had all the lifting and hard standing facilities available to hand and was more than capable of undertaking all the the required
remedial work himself.
Suspect that the costs of sorting this damage would have made it uneconomic to repair for any owner having to buy in the expertise, coming close to what the boat would be worth.
Want to take a bet on what sort of drive system his next boat will have. :ROFLMAO:
