Hi, am in the process of repowering my Icelander 18. I have built a marinised Ford Endura DE (XLD). I am at the stage of being ready to fabricate the drive system but i am now beginning to wonder whether i should replace the non power trimmed Enfield "Z" drive thats currently fitted to my boat. It would make sense if i do it now before i spend hours on the lathe joining my engine to the existing drive.

Has anyone replaced one of these outdrives with a more modern mercruiser or volvo unit? I have been trying to compare the sizes of the holes in the transolm etc! Also what price should i expect to pay for one needing overhaul?

Thanks for any advice in advance.

Volvo 270/280 leave a hole several times larger than Merc so they did the obvious and made an adapter. Not cheap but a pro solution. Might be useful also for the Enfield.

You might also consider the Merc clone SEI (www.sterndrive.cc) for a less expensive drive

Thanks all, mechancally i wont need an adaptor plate from the engine as i will machine an adaptor to fit. I am aware of the PTandT Enfield but 3 years of ebay searching and av never even seen 1 for sale! Been offered an old wreck of a mercruiser for £500 with an engine so might take the plunge!

I have been looking for a power trimmed one for about 3 years! Hens teeth me thinks!! I have been offered a complete drive with an old 3.0 merc engine for £500, tempted to take the plunge!

My old 21 speedboat had a Volvo racing drive (1970's era) that basically someone had bolted a couple rams to it, it worked great!
