I have just bought a "new" boat ( Boomaroo 22 - you cal them Jaguars, I think) - Yanks call hem Catalinas.

It came with a Honda 7.5 HP, 4 stroke outboard - about mid 70s vintage. I have on my existing 18 ft boat a Johnson 6 hp 2 stroke - mid 90s vintage. The 4 stroke has no kill cord, but the 2 stroke does.

Advice please.

Should I keep the 4 stroke or 2 stroke?

if they were the same age it would be no contest, but with the age difference this is a hard call and would have to depend on the comparative condition of the two engines. The 4 stroke would be the better power for the boat. What is their comparative weight, do either of them have charging capability, and is this different?

Not a lot of help, but may give you clues.

I havehad theHonda chedked by a mechanic - who thinks it is in good condition aprat from one leg of the mounting fo rhte starter - which needs weleoidng, he says.

The Honda has a charging unit, but the Johnson does not.

The Johnson has hardly been used. Don't know about the Honda, but obviously some use over the years.

Hi Ray,

Agree with Talbot, it's a close call. Having had a Honda on a 22 footer many moons ago, I would definitely favour that. Ok, the charging facility isn't going to run the Blackpool lights, but it's very useful nonetheless. Trouble is, the Johnsons are cracking little motors too, and extemely well engineered IMHO, so you can expect a very long life given proper maintenance.

Perhaps there's an option of moth-balling the Johnson and using the Honda until it becomes uneconomical to repair or dies? That's the route I'd go, if only for the big difference in fuel economy and a dislike of ditching good equipment!!!

Cheers

Jerry

Those 6hp Johnsons are great little motors,I dont know the Honda, is there much weight difference between them? The previous poster who reccommends mothballing the newer one might be on to something.

I used an Evinrude 6HP which I believe is the same motor, a brand new impeller separated from its centre bush after very little use and no abuse. Keep an eye on it.

Hi Ray if you are sailing on Lake Burley Griffin you don't need a motor just get some very long paddles and use the pushpit as a rowlock. My Castle goes really well in a dead calm that way. you won't need charging if you charge the battery at home or use a solar panel if the boat is left at club.
If you must have a motor I think time will make the decision for you if you keep both. I have an ancient Johnson 6 and once you figure out howe to dismantle it it yours should go for ever like mine. and you can still get parts for them. i don't know the Honda. I found it interesting I now no what a Catalia or a Jaguar is. regards will
