Anybody have experience of four stroke outboards. ie. Yamaha or Honda ?
I like the idea of the Honda being aircooled and lightweight, but is this at the expense of robustness ?.
Out of interest, the reason for my changing is that my twelve year old Mariner has a broken fuel tank neck . The cost of a new one..........£45.00 ! .

I had a Yamaha 9.9 four stroke which I bought second hand. It turned out that it needed a lot of work to restore full oil pressure and the cost of parts put me off purchasing another if I was to buy second hand again. They have a good reputation from new though, so I guess it comes down to money.

Can you not source a second hand part for your mariner at a more reasonable cost? (There I go again being a cheapskate).

Give Bill Higham outboards a call. Can't remember the number, but if you do a search on google it'll give the website. Think they do mail order over the web as well.

Have had a Honda B75 for over twenty years. Not air cooled. Very reliable but there are a few metalurgical.......I think that is the word, problems.
The carburettor design and metal construction was flawed leading to eventual distortion of the carb. I can't get a new one since the O/B is so old so Red Hermatite bungs up the air leak in the emulsion block.
The head had to be replaced after about four years due to corrosion between the water jacket and the exhaust tract but the "new" one has lasted since.
I have been told that they do not like continuous immersion in salt water so mine comes up at every stop so I have not had this problem.
Still, it's twenty odd years old and still going strong so that must say something.

I also had a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke and like you found the cost of spares prohibitive. Sold it and bought a new Mariner 8 HP 2 stroke which has performed satisfactorily except for initial problems with the 'hi reverse thrust' prop.
I also have an old 2 hp Mariner for the tender and again they want silly prices for parts. The only solution with older engines is DIY and purchasing second hand spares. I have found that dealer quotes for even minor repairs can easily be higher than the price of a new engine.
