I have a middle aged Mercury 4.5 hp 2 stroke.

It has recently ceased ticking over - It starts easily enough and then roars into life - But it stays reving very fast and will not tick over and as such it is becoming rather difficult / dangerous to use.

The throttle cable is not stuck. So unless anyone can suggest an obvious cause I need to take it somewhere to be serviced. This is where my problem starts. I work in Crawley and trying to find someone who I could get to at the beginning of the week and collect before the following weekend is a real problem - not surprisingly most of the repairers are near the cost - which I can't get to during the week..

Has anyone any ideas / recommendations?

Throttle cable adjustment
Throttle stop screw (on carb and twist grip?)
Idle jet setting
Mixture screw setting
Air leak?

There isn't a lot else, a blockage or partial blockage isn't going to make it rev., the reverse is more likely, unless the butterfly valve isn't seating....?

There are two screws on the carb, these need adjusting as per your manual (you can probably download this somewhere like Brunswick). You may also need to clean the carb, but this is easy enough to do. I learned to clean my carb on a pontoon following a very exciting sail onto said pontoon (following engine failure...)
