Taking the hood and leaving a canvas cover is seen as an option. Makes it harder to sell. You can buy a replacement hood obviously, but they don't want to spend money or have to hang on to it that long.

If it's a last minute decision. You could just take hood and cover with tarp etc.

One of my site managers annoyed at his site office being broken in to several times devised an anti burglar device based on a brick on a string with a trip mechanism when the door opened. The brick would hit an intruder in the face.
He proudly showed me his invention which I admired for its ingenuity but had to tell him to take it down as you're not legally allowed to deliberately main people even if they're breaking into your property.

I think these GPS devices are the way to go. I know if your phone is lost (or stolen) and you have the appropriate "app" you can trace where the phone is.
