Hello everyone.

Sorry I keep popping up and then disappearing again, we're having a THIRD year where sailing just doesn't seem destined to happen. This was the only weekend of the summer when we thought we'd be able to have a weekend afloat. I won't bore you all with the ridiculous reasons I find myself now sitting here on the sofa, but one of the things I did do was to get the painter round the prop of the outboard and break the pin. So. That needs fixing, but also, while we've got the (rude word) thing at home, we need to fix the fact that unless it is kept upright at all times, all the petrol leaks out, though I can never figure out where! Can anyone recommend someone to have a look? Google has failed me.

Chrissie

You should be able to fix the pin yourself. It is only a matter of removing the prop and replacing the pin with the spare which you should have attached somewhere (to the O/B, not yourself).

Take split pin out of the prop , pull prop off, remove remains of broken pin , replace new pin , smear a little waterproof grease on shaft (not essential tho) replace prop aligning with new pin , replace split pin . 10 min job .

Yamaha engines have a spare pin clipped inside the cowl, cant remember where but it wasnt very obvious, other makes may be the same.

Without wishing to insult your intelligence:), is the fuel vent on the filler cap closed and the fuel tap shut off when laid down?. TBH it should be easy to spot a leak on the short run from the tank to the carb and replace/tighten the hose/clip. But then I only have experience of Yamaha engines, others might be a bit more tricky?

It is a very, very old Yamaha. Lol yes, the vent etc all tightened up. Maybe I should look at it again. When you tip it up and put the pin in to lift the prop out of the water, nothing visible is leaking but when you come to go home, the tank is empty and the tender is slopping around petrol in the floor!

I would recommend marine engineer Anthony Kettlelty - based near Ipswich but covers Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex and is much less expensive than other local outboard folks we have used in the past. Mobile 07887 620830. Sorted our Yamaha out v quickly and at short notice just before our hols. Collected and returned to the marina £40 :D
Just realised he has a website too and does all marine engineering work http://www.akmarineservices.co.uk/

John 'The Bridge' from the RSA does outboard repairs and servicing in his spare time. £25 to service a mercury 2.5 if that gives you an idea of his prices. PM me if you want his number. He is in Wakering S'end.
Just reminded me that I still have Bernies OB in my garage :o

try this link. I see you are in the paglesham area so might be the wrong side of the river. Simon is in Southminster (north of Burnham on Crouch) and although the link is on the seagull site, Simon does all kinds of marine engineering work. he services my honda outboard so he should be able to solve your problem.
