I have a Mid 90s Yam 2Stroke 40HP fitted with new Quicksilver steering controls. I have just refitted engine and connected steering control arm. As a novice outboarder I am concerned that the force required to move the engine through its full movement is rather stiff. With the engine unconnected the teleflex steering is smooth and the wheel turns easily. The Outboard, without the control rod threaded through the OB steering tube, can be moved easily with just light pressure. However when all is connected turning to Sboard is fairly easy, requiring one hand but turning to port requires two hands and a fair force for a 16stone bloke is required. I've looking at the components for a couple of hours now, have stripped down, and re-connected and for the life of me cannot see whats causing the resisitance. The Quicksilver controls are new and as I said before run totally free with the OB disconnected. I guess the steering cannot be "sloppy" as it would overcome any resistance and alter direction once under way at sea.

Does steering typically become easier once underway and the added water pressure on the side of the leg assist resistive forces ??

Any advice re. Yam402Strokes welcome

As a follow up, the problem was too many bends in the run. Although some of the bends were long and sweeping taking out just 1 solved the problem.
