outboard prop when sailing

I usually have the outboard leg up when sailing but sometimes this is not convenient to do.
is it better to leave engine in neutral, in forward or reverse
the particular reason for my query is that having just replaced the cooling impellor it reminds me that if the engine is turned backwards then this may not be very good for the impellor
my outboard (tohatsu 30HP) has a clutch/slipping dog) on the prop that seems to stop you turning the engine backwards - is this the purpose of this dog or is there another reason for it?

If in neutral only the prop should turn and then in the forward direction only in reverse when going astern,putting it in ahead gear should lock the transmission if you are worried. slipping dog clutch if I assume,to allow for over running when throttle is shut at high revs. May be miss informed about that one.

With an outboard Neutral for me as well. If for no other reason than to reduce the drag. I think your Idea might be coming from the practice of putting folding props into reverse to force them closed and preventing them from rotating and generating noise..
