Hi today ive started my 15 hp johnson outboard 15RL74S for the first time in 3 years at first water was coming out the outlet then white smoke..the petrol and 2 stroke oil are 3 years old also, could this be the problem ...any help would be really great as i have no idea when it comes to outboards,,,thanks

The impeller could have broken up. Might have worked for a few mins the gone.

Either that or you have a blockage in the cooling system somewhere.

Stick a flame/ match on 3 year old petrol then, it will ignite. If the symptoms you describe are that the water coming out of the 'outlet' has turned to steam. Farsco is nearer the problem

ive started it again today its smoke coming out ive still got to try new petrol/2stroke ..many thanks for your help

I guess the "smoke you describe is the oil in the fuel and old oil lingering in the engine burning off. They usually smoke well when first started after standing around , esp if fogged when laid up.
Fresh fuel may well make it easier to start and to run better but unlikely yo have great effect on the volume of smoke which will slowly diminish anyway

Steam is another matter ... If you have steam being emitted from anywhere it is a sign of overheating due to insufficient cooling water flow.

It almost ceratainly needs a new water pump impeller, The water ways could also be bunged up ... possibly with bits of the old impeller that may have broken up.

Some useful advice on re-awakening a sleeping out boat here: http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engi...231-awakening-a-sleeping-outboard-by-boatbuoy

Dont run it until you have sorted out the cooling issue

I must say the replies are really helpful...THANKS...To change the impeller do i have to replace gaskets will i need sealant is the job easy for a novice (im not to bad at taking things apart fixing them putting them back together) many thanks

Best thing to do is google your outboard. You will likely find a You Tube clip showing you how to replace the impeller.
