Outboard Powered Trawlers/w.Pics

...by which terms Volvo would be out of the sterndrive business since Volvo Penta outboards are looong gone.

Merc + a few others on the contrary have both on the shelf.

Hello Rusty,
Those ally Specmar working boats do look very neat - I've bookmarked them, thanks!
Have you got any links for the American boats in post 4?
And the 'trawlers' in posts 4 and 6?

The boat in post 6 looks similar to the Fales 32 which was built in the USA in the 70's - here is a brief summary on Sailboat Data :
http://sailboatdata.com/viewrecord.asp?class_id=3873
Although the photo in the link is of a Fales 38, not a 32 - they were available as either pure trawlers, or with a small motor-sailing rig.

Here is one for sale on YouTube :

The Eastern lobster boats also look very fine - here is a link to Rusty's photo of Sol - http://easternboats.com/eastern-31/ (click on the gallery)

And apologies for the thread drift, as this has nothing to do with O/B motors, but here is a nice 56' 'trawler' yacht for sale in probably Martinique or Guadeloupe - they claim almost 4 miles per gallon, and a 5,000 mile range.......

Hi Bajan,

Both those boats in post 4 are from Sam Delvin: http://store.devlinboat.com/Boats-32-feet.aspx

unfortunately they are designed for plywood/epoxy construction, but Sam quoted me $2200 to convert the plans to alloy.

sorry can't help with the motor sailer: copied from a random post on a forum!

Great thought and pics
Considering Trawler!

Hi Romans,
Its nice to go from 'in a minority of one'.......to a 'majority of two!' Years and years and years of diesel tradition in the Uk is hard to circumvent! :D

The Alaskans are the real experts when it comes alloy OB trawlers/fishing rigs; they are a very common choice in the Pacific North West I believe.

A few more OB trawler 'style':) boats.

this one has water jets : just like the boat. Possibility of OB conversion.

Forgot to include the lovely Cape Dory built on the lobster hull design: not exactly a dory as we would think of them.

Please let me know when you get bored with my ramblings....

Some other iconic American trawler designs, not OB's of course:

The Ocean Alexander 45' and 48'.

....and the 45'.

Thanks Zippy and Romans8...,.

I'm limiting myself to boats smaller than 15mtr and less than £150k; boats we could conceivably own ourselves, cruising at 7kts/ 2mpg for over 40'ers,and 4mpg less than 40'.

The Ocean Alexander 50' from the '80's still looks fresh for those that prefer a more modern trawler look, well inside our budget.

Pretty much our criteria.

I guess where they fall down in internal layout / finish??

That doesn't look an 80s boat! Very nice

We can't look at American boats without mentioning Europa designs, which appear on many different and varied makes.

A Europa is a boat that has struts/posts from the bulwarks that extend up to the fly bridge/sundeck.

Heres a Marine trader with lots of 'Europa' magic.

Americans have some lovely interiors in their trawlers.

this is Monterry trawler with traditional wooden finishes.

....and the boat:

Continuing with our Europa theme, an Island Gypsy 32' many of which have made it over to our shores.

just one Europa strut!!!

We are nearing the end of the semi-d types that are nice; IMO of course.
i don't like aft cabins, but this design is an exception: Mainship 43.

And finally we must mention the Kady Krogen 42/44.

This boat has crossed the Atlantic, Pacific and is a real Passagemaker.
Recently a guy crossed from NY to Ireland and averaged 6kts/4mpg/120hp Ford Lehman over the whole journey, including some very bad weather; He arrived in Ireland a few days ago...!:encouragement:

My interest in American boats was started with the Mainship 34' from the 80's available from $10k upwards.....

imagejpg1_zps799fc019.jpg

and the Swift trawler 34' look alike.......SNAP!

The American boating community is more traditional than the British, and they have a strong heritage to be proud of.

PS:If you're interested in a small US trawlers the Tollycraft is the Rolls Royce, it was moulded in the states unlike the other makes which were churned out of Taiwan and China and can suffer from water ingress into sandwich GRP construction in the decks, hulls and superstructure; very expensive and time consuming to repair.

Tollycraft 37'
