My Mercury (Tohatsu) 3.5 four stroke which only one and a half years old, overheated and now it get a bit smokey at full throttle. For some reason it got very hot, perhaps it sucked something that stopped the cooling water momentarily (a minute or so).

I have changed the oil and I tried the engine today on the tender; starts ok, but on full throttle, it hesitates and then spits out a lot of smoke, then runs ok for a few minutes and then it get smokey again. I can take it to the dealers for repairs; at what price?; The engine has been serviced by the dealers regularly, so I am covered by the guarantee? The other option is to take the cylinder head off and check the valves stc. Have you had similar problems?

If its covered by the guarantee dont mess with it your self or it will be invalidated.

A compression test might be worth doing though. Probably the first thing a mechanic will do.

Probably it will need cylinder bore, piston and rings looking at rather than just valves.

I am afraid you are right; it is most likely that the rings got damaged.
