This picture shows the gauze oil filter on my Suzuki DF4 auxillary outboard. The makers say it needs cleaning as part of an annual service.

To get at it requires removing the engine completely from the drive leg and base plate.

Does anyone really do this annually?

annually I take outboard out of the boot of my car and put it in the garage, a few months later I put it back in the car ready for visits to the boat. Just occassionally I put it into fresh water, and after a few years I might even change the plug and gearbox oil. Last outboard was still going strong after 20+ years, and money saved on servicing paid for a new tohatsu 3.5

Experiece will tell just how often it needs cleaning but think about this. All car engines have a coarse filter in the oil pick up from the sump. They are never cleaned in the entire life of the engine.

I think Talbot is refering to a 2 stroke. You never have to clean an oil filter on those!

If you are concerned then change your oil an extra time during the season when engine is hot. Any swarf will come out and anything in the gauze should stay there. Don`t think it`s a problem.

Not necessarily.
Not cleaned as part of any service schedule, true.
Cleaned frequently if oil pressure problems experienced.

Black sludge problems occur in car engines which do frequent stop-start journeys and never get the chance to get properly warm. Some brands of oil are worse in certain marques of car.
We clean about 6-8 per year and the crap we get out of them is amazing. Sometimes it's so bad we have to renew the oil pick-up pipe.

Change the oil enough and you'll have no probs in the hairdressermobile. My rnagie gets new oil and filter every 3.5-4k. Still spangly clean in the engine. My van for work with 250k on the clock has the same....still going strong after 10 years....don't worry about it, just use a decent oil, decent doesn't mean expensive

A quick google came up with this.

Thr crud builds up all over the engine internals (including the gauze on the pick-up pipe)

It flakes off a little (usually sticks like the proverbial sh*t on a blanket) and the flakes get stuck in the gauze and then hardens, choking the pick-up.

Ford CVH engine breather in the rocker cover also chokes, which means cutting it open, scraping the crud out and welding the rocker cover back together or buying a new one.

no doubt the 20/30k first service is commonplace now....engineering standards and all that....just I'm a bit dubious about it all personally

"Ford CVH engine breather in the rocker cover also chokes, which means cutting it open, scraping the crud out and welding the rocker cover back together or buying a new one."............try caustic soda or even Mr Muscle oven cleaner...its easier and quicker.

HI, I'M BARRY SCOTT, TRY CILLIT BANG LIME AND GRIME FOR ALL THOSE GUNKED UP FORD ROCKER COVERS!..........only joking....or am I?

Thanks for the advise .I just cleaned it on our well used 3 year old motor.Hardly anything on there just a tiny bit of what looked like gasket material or similar. I had the engine off to clear an overheating problem.

I dont think I would strip it down again just to do the filter.
