Outboard gear Q 25HP Johnson

External lever on the console rotates a 3 toothed contraption, FNR on the front of the OB inside the cowling

When N is set on the centre stud F works, but no R
So the 3 toothed contraption has to be set off centre, not in 'N' for the gearbox to work properly

I assume the external indicator and the gearbox are out of sync ?

Can I 'just' adjust something near the gearbox or is this a leg off / mechanic job ?

You give no clue a the identity of the engine. There have been countless variations of 25hp Johnsons over about 1/2 century
