My Tohatsu 3.5 works well but, short of removing half of the cover(several screws), it's difficult to see the fuel level. My cunning plan is to cut a small window in the side of the cover and insert a bit of clear plastic. What type of plastic would suit?

Not sure that would work. Won't you need the light shining through the tank to see the level. I think the window would need to be quite big to allow enough light through.

How about just opening and looking in the fuel filler cap, or perhaps a small window in the filler cap.

Obviously I do this but it's difficult to see how full (or empty) it is.

I could always cut another wee window on the other side, I suppose.
