I need to replace the fuel connector which fits into my Honda 5hp 4 stroke but the one available from Honda and, it seems every other maker, has too narrow a diameter for the tube from the tank.

The photo shows the old one on the left with the newer one from Honda wher the male spigot is too small.

Honda tell me it is not one of theirs. I have looked at the petrol tank and it is made my Nuova Rade with the bulb and connector bearing the 'Made in USA' stamp. The tube outside diameter is 15mm with the inner at 10mm.

I have searched most of the online chandlers but can find nothing of this size.

Any suggestions folks?

May I ask where you bought the new one and if it was packaged up as a genuine/pattern Honda item?

They are usually a standard size hose connector so shouldn't differ between makes, If it is a cheap copy, that may be where you have run into a problem.

Yes it was a genuine Honda packaged part from Lings - Honda Original Parts. They have been quite helpful but unable to identify my old connector. I ordered it from Lings having consulted their on ine diagram of the model of outboard that I have - only to find that it doesn't appear to be a Honda Part.

I have searched under Nuova Rade and it comes up with the same size spigot as the Honda one. I would add that the new one fits okay into the male connector on the outboard but not the tube to the tank.

A short length of hose to fit the new connector ( 8mm / 5/16" ??) and a reducing nipple to join it to the 10mm hose would solve the problem

I have I think traced the actual connector you need to Sierra part number 18-80403-1 Thats the one for a whole range of Honda outboards from 8 hp upwarsd an fits the 3/8" fuel line.

http://www.marineengine.com/parts/s...arineengine.com/parts/sierra_marine/index.htm

You'd have to confirm it's the right connector for your engine though

But where you would get the Sierra part i dont know. Got any friends or family in the USA ?

use the new honda one with a honda pipe, then get a hose nipple for each size and a collar to join.

Thanks Vic for your in depth search, although I don't have any friends in the USA.

I don't really want to go down the adaptor route only because of the risk of getting an air leak into the system.

Thanks Dave. I will go into the Honda dealer in Plymouth tomorrow to see if they have any suggestions. I have returned the new Honda bit to Lings although if all else fails I will have to get another - plus adapters.

What is wrong with the old connector.

If its leaking where it mates with the engine connector it may just need a new O ring. They are replaceable

I think it is leaking air due to a weak spring clip. I do not have or cannot see an o ring.

I am attaching a photo of the male connector on the outboard.

I had trouble with the connector clip on my Honda 5 hp.
The connector I replaced it with was a pattern piece and was absolute rubbish.
Unless you are paying about £20 it's not a Honda part.
You can buy as many £5 connectors as you like, they'll just keep spitting "o" rings out.

If its not clipping on securely ie it falls off or can be pulled off whith unclipping it then fair enough its the clip that is worn

But if it clips on securely then is very probably a damaged or worn O ring in the fuel port of the connector.

the O rings are replaceable, not easily maybe but replaceable. Part #20 in this diagram

I agree with LS avoid cheap connectors also be aware that several makes look the same but are not. Its possible that yours is the same as Yamaha one but they are ever so slightly different to Evinrude ones ( I discovered)

Good point! The connector from Lings Hinda was £23 and others I see on the web are as little as £4!

Thanks Vic. I must admit that the one I have looks difficult to remove but I will go the rounds of the Chandlers/ Outboard agents today and see what they have.

I seem to have located a similar size connector from Yachparts in their new premises near QAB in Plymouth. Will try it out later.

Thanks folks for all your advice so far.

I have a 1985 Honda B100. hunting around the boat yard I found about ten hoses only one fits although they all look the same.
I found the following description from a seller on ebay I haven't received it yet but this seems to sum up what I see is the answer.

MEASURING YOUR MALE PIN = Holding pin for clip is 5.5mm and the fuel barb is 8.1mm ...The main "tell" is the barb clip recess slot is about 15mm from the base. (The other type is 20mm from the base), big difference so an easy "tell" sign. See pictures of both fittings to help too.
