Outboard for lugsail dinghy

I wish to obtain the liightest suitable outboard for a 15ft wooden lugsail dinghy to be used in the Falmouth estuary. The boat is beamy and solid. The problem is that the outboard will have to be carried considerable distances.

I note that Yamaha produce a 3.5hp that compares for weight with the lightest range of 2.3 - 2.5 hp tender 4strokes.

I shall welcome advice, opinions and prejudices.

lightest engine has always been the 2 hp Yamaha 2 stroke.

For a dinghy of such design, should you not get a renovated seagull????????

But a small investment in a sack truck for easy transport would make it all worthwhile.

Go on. you know it makes sense. A Seagull will set a traditional dinghy off perfectly. Get an oil-proof foam pad & sling it over your shoulder. A 40- will do, give you 3-4kts in most conditions, sounds lovely (search U-tube for Seagull vids) and a pretty blue haze hovering over the water behind you. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You could always use a golf bag wheel thingy with a bit of a heath robinson addition to carry the outboard.

Gotta be a Seagull - totally reliable, appropriate to your dinghy and non-PC, mine has the Yamaha beat to a frazzle for reliability

Concensus of opinion is that it has to be a Seagull. A Forty Featherweight wont be powerful enough. They only come in a shorter than usual shaft length too.

A Forty plus will be adequate anything larger may be too heavy for you.

Estimate the shaft length you require by meauring the height of the transom above the water.
A short/standard shaft model will be right if this is around 15". A long shaft model will be required if this is around 20". That applies to any make not just Seagulls.
