Last year the yard serviced my 9.9hp o/b and the bill was scary - over £200 for a 2 year old engine

Recommendations for no nonsense outboard servicing in Suffolk anyone?

Hello, long time lurker on this forum, newbie poster so I hope you don't mind me posting a response to this.
It's not quite in Suffolk but Richard Cottee of Frinton Boat Services (01255 850440) was suggested to me last year after drawing a blank elsewhere (temperamental Mariner 3.3). I would highly recommend him, good service, good price.
Hannah.

Thanks Hannah, welcome to posting on the East Coast Forum.

I don't DIY the o/b because it's our main engine and I don't want to mess it up. If it was just the dinghy o/b I'd do it all.

Hi Simon there is very little to do, get some one to guide you through it £200 + is a high % of the engine value. Also then when it goes Futt offshore you will be better placed to fix it

One of my mates used him in the past and spoke highly of him.

BUT

I agree with Sailorman, you should know how to do all these basic jobs on your own engine. What happens if it goes wrong at sea?? (I know some would say "call the lifeboat" but, I beleive if you decide to go to sea you should be properly prepared for most eventualities).

Not sure how that's connected to servicing? I can bleed the carb, change the plug, check the plug for a spark, change the electric start to manual and find if there is a fuel blockage. None of those things are dealt with at a service. Plus by having it professionally serviced I get a trained mechanic to look over the engine once a year to identify any problems I can't see. I just wanted to pay a lot less than £200 which was silly money.
