My 2HP Honda outboard is usually very reliable, but at the end of last season it suddenly stopped and refused to re-start. I put it in the shed and keep meaning to check it.
Finally got to strip it this weekend and I thought I'd pass on this gem of wisdom.
If you want to keep these machines purring, don't fill them up with diesel.:o

Doh! :-)

Petrol these days turns to a brown sludge if an engine is not used for a few months and diesel is a good rust prevenative so you have probabally done your engine good by storing it over the winter with diesel in it, you could even start selling 1 litre bottles of diesel for a fiver as an engine preserver :)

Tip - don't put Diesel in a Green can ;)

I'm OK then - my spare diesel is in a black plastic can.

However, so is the plain petrol for my generator

They do have "DIESEL" and "4-STROKE" on them in white paint though :). Although the petrol tends to dissolve the paint if spilled. Also the diesel one has "DAVIES" painted on it, though that's neither here nor there (my name is not Davies).

The 2-stroke petrol mix for the outboard lives in a red plastic can.

The only green cans I have are two metal jerries, one empty and one containing sludgy contaminated red diesel. I used to give the stuff to a mate who inflicted it on other people's generators, but he's stopped doing that.

Pete
