i had a small 6hp outboard stolen, now the insu company say i can buy another engine up to £500.

the max size for my inflatable is 10hp and the six had difficulty planing with 2 adults so would like a 8 or 10hp.

my problem is i cant find any for sale , don't care if its 2s or 4stroke as it sits on a trailer so don't need to lift it much.
Ins company say i have to buy engine and send them the invoice and they will reimburse so i presume that means i will have to go to a dealer to find one so that rules out any private sale i suppose.
any ideas how to locate a suitable engine for near to the 500 as i dont have any more at the moment.

Nope, I wouldn't say that was the case - you might wanna get the ins co to confirm that a suitably invoiced s/h private sale is acceptable in advance - but there shouldn't be any problem with it imo.

Try Bill Higham Marine Here . Lots of S/hand or clearance engines, give him a ring. His workshop/shop is like a Tardis and he often has special deals on. Tell him how much you want to spend and he will match a range of engines to it.

Cheers

just tried bill Higham and he's getting back to me.
also spoke to ins company and its ok to buy privately as long as get a receipt with address and price on it.

Good luck,

I have bought outboards (and sold him) and he his good to deal with. If you can buy Secondhand look at Boatsandoutboards, always a good selection on there.

Cheers

Having had loads of stuff stolen over the years my advice if you can't find what you want is to throw it back to the insurers and tell them to buy it for you! Works every time!

They'll soon up the cash on offer! Good luck!!

you could always spend more than the £500 and put in the extra cash yourself?
then you could probably get the engine you want rather the one that the insurance money will buy

that's also a good idea except until January I'm pretty broke with 4 birthdays and Christmas coming up. i suppose i could get them to save the money until the new yr but i love using the boat in the estuary when its a calm cold day.

I'd tell the ins co to get lost. They owe you your losses. They dont have the right to tell you how to spend the policy payout. Tell them to send you the £500 as a cheque and spend it on wine and women, if you want

Marine insurance contracts work on an indemnity basis. Not all insist but technically they can require the insured to spend money on a replacement before ante-ing up.

the ins company or brokers probably is Mercia marine.
I've just spoken to them and said there are no engines about like the one i had and after a bit of persuasion they are going to send a cheque.

the problem is i still cant find a suitable engine. the 2 i have found are both longshaft and its only a 3.2mtr inflatable with air floor so i presume the longshaft will create a problem on the tranform

You may be right (I'm happy to stand corrected if so) but fwiw that isn't the actual meaning of "indemnity basis" afaik, si it? Cue Observer :-)
