need to replace the wood on my outboard bracket as it has rotted and nearly lost the engine today. good job i always put safty rope on it /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
what is the best wood for the job?

Mine is ply. Actually made from two thinner pieces stuck together. Just made like that because I wanted a slightly larger pad for my "new" engine and I found a piece of ply half the thickness I needed on the rubbish pile in the boat yard. Been in use now for about 20 years but I stick a bucket over it in the winter to protect it. Usually "re-varnished" when necessary with what ever I am using for the exterior wood work.

If I was making another tomorrow I would use some old teak ? laboratory bench top that I have handy.

(The original was ply)

go to a 99p shop two plastic chopping boards trimed to shape and some two pack glue jod a good one /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

But make sure the plastic will not degrade in sunlight. Chopping boards are not normally exposed to sunlight so it is not something to take for granted.

Also make sure the adhesive is suitable for the material the chopping boards are made of. Some plastics are quite difficult to glue effectively.

Two thicknesses may not be enough. It would not be for my outboard as the clamp screws would not tighten onto that thickness
