Hello,
I'm trying to fit an outboard to the back of my Venturer (I'm fed up with the smokey well). Has anyone ever made (or bought) a guilotine-type sliding bracket that would lift a long-shaft engine clear of the water. (The sprung type doesn't have enough lift and is /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif too close to the hull.
Thanks,

Funnily enough I part saw a device on the stern of a part completed mobo tied up in Weymouth after the driver (I won't say captain) had been recovered into port..

It appeared to be two tubes shaped to fit the transom/stern section of the boat with a vertical sliding carriage attached to it. On the carriage was mounted the outboard. It wasn't a small device but I suppose it depends on what size motor has to be carried.

I assume here you have a high transom and need a long travel lift. Basically you start with a box shape the outer panel having the board for clamping the motor and on the inner side it normally attaches to the transom you attach to a sliding track.
You should look around a chandlers for track and sliders. The type used for jib sheeting cars might suffice. You need a track on each side of the bracket say 30 cms apart. You need a slider or car (4 off) at the top and bottom of the frame and duplicated on the other side. The top and bottom cars need to be at least 30cms apart. You will need a tackle to hoist the bracket up and something above the motor to hoist from.
Now the tricky part is what kind of track system will suffice. The stainless steel track with sides rolled in and a bronze slider would be the cheapest but may present too much friction. The other extreme would be mainsail traveller ball bearing roller cars which would be very expensive. I would try the former first. Yes I agree those O/B wells are awefulll. They take up too much room for one thing. regards olewill

Mara,

Welcome! I assume you mean a Newbridge Venturer? It is possible to get the well to work er... well without too much hassle, and to avoid getting smoked out of the cockpit. The general principle has come up here before - try a search on "outboard well" on this forum.

Where are you based? If you mount the O/B on the transom, it may spend more of its life out of the water than in if you motor on the sea. Even the one in our well was stirring air at times last weekend. PM me if you want any Venturer specific info.

If you were considering a conversion to inboard engine, then I could understand!

Andy

You mean something like this......

Outboard.jpg

All steel (not stainless) with plenty of paint and grease!
It cost me next to nothing as I made it myself from someone elses waste steel.
The rails stand about 4 inches clear of the transom when the engine is removed, so no problem with it hitting anything while manouevering.

Next plan is to build a frame with a hoist to save me having to lift the outboard!

Thank you all for the info. I've enough material now to keep my friday night sailing buddies sketching on their beer mats for the whole night. (This is my usual way of getting new designs).
I'll report back when I get a working model.
Thanks again,
