NB. For Sue, rearranging the bunting does not constitute, ''dossing on the boat when you should be sorting the garden'', it's a matter of priorities.
 
I find that an alternative word for pennant (perhaps just for the streamer type?) is 'vimpel', the origins of which are apparently the same as those of 'wimple'. ('Blue Nuns of the East Coast', anyone? :)). 'Burgee' may derive from 'bourgeois' (cf. 'burgess'). Just thought you etiquette buffs might like to know that.

Yes, and vimpel in Danish and Swedish (and German, IIRC) as well as English. I haven't been able to find any connection with wimple in terms of the shape of the cloth, but the etymologies are apparently connected.
