out of water ?

Hi, I am planning of getting my Kim Holman “Rummer” out of water. Being of wood, for how long can I leave the sailing boat on dry land (maybe garaged)?

That all depends...

...on where you are!

I know two Rummer class yawls, one of which is "Rummer" herself, and they seem to stay out for 4-6 months over each winter. This is in Suffolk, England, where the design comes from, of course.

If you are somewhere with a very dry winter climate, espescially if it is also windy, you perhaps need to be more careful about these things. You are in Malta, and I am searching my memory to remember the Maltese climate in winter!

If you can get the boat indoors, that will certainly be best, unless and until the building becomes very hot.

I would think you would be OK for several months, at least, but as I recall there are good boatyards in Malta, with experience with wooden boats, and it might be best to ask their advice.

Thanks for the reply. The climate in Malta is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers, warm and sporadically wet autumns, and short, cool winters with adequate rainfall. Winters are mild with only rare occurrences of cold weather brought by north and northeast winds from central Europe.

The boat will be in a garage (rather big in fact there will be at least two other boats - average 30' each - one of which is also wood) for two months .. i.e. december and January. is it ok ?

No problem at all. Should be ideal conditions for her. The drying effect of sun and wind is what opens up seams. You will be avoiding these.
