Out of sight........

Re: No, seriously.....

I kept out hoping that you were about to announce some spectacular trip.

Anyway, er for what it's worth I often go out of sight of land. Only ten miles or so innit, depending on conditions, nearer twenty miles offshore otherwise i spose.

Folks are forever asking me. Whats the furtherest place You've bin. When I tell them it's Stourport or Tobermoray they look glum!! Britany though not as far, there most unimpressed by. If I mention Alderney. They've never heard of it.

Re: No, seriously.....

Have not got a clue. I just stick the cross thingy on the plotter and press go. Boat goes long way out to sea and turns up there. Why's it matter where it is??

Thought you'd gone to Boliholic isles anyway.

Re: Out of sight

Hey Tony there I was playing scrabble the other day, (not all sun sea & sex out here you know) and naughty I know but looked up a word int dictionary, the word was "offing" Now we all know the expression in the offing, i.e. about to happen, but did you no "offing" also means "area of the sea visible from the shore"

Sadly the opposite to offing i.e. say "oning" does not exist otherwise it would be "area of shore visible from the sea, which in the case of your thread would be relevent.

Re: scrabble

Neil has got a load of wilbur smith books and they're always using the word offing. In fact, the phrase "in the offing" was originally a marine term, and the use of the phrase to mean "soon" derives from that - the "soon" bit of a voyage is whilst making the offing.

I have visions of you having a very very dull time out there. No, you can't have "boatings" as a word.

Re: scrabble

The scrabble comes out when the rains come and the poxy satellite thingy loses the soaps for SWMBO

Re: Yes

Next year should we should be able too.. I thought about people who come over and would like perhaps to bring wife and kids, but of course not practical as pupils alone stay on boat. So we have bought an apartment in the port, and will look at letting it out to pupils and family. Will keep you posted. Clive
