Very often, apart from jollies, most of my overnight/long passages are out of sight of land. Land hard, sea soft, I like it like that! (well relatively soft)

Re: No, seriously.....

My Dad is still UK based, and last year he went from Flushing all the way down to Dieppe. Fourteen hours non-stop. Often out of sight of land and as a result, he says he doesn't care if he never hears the sound of a diesel engine again. Still trying to pursaude him to decamp to Oz. At least we have proper weather for boating. G'day folks

Re: No, seriously.....

We did Portsmouth to La Rochelle this year via Chenal du Four & Raz du Sein. Quite a learning curve.

Re: No, seriously.....

Menorca to Costa del sol (550nm) longest passage between land masses probably Mallorca to Ibiza 85nm so a good part out of site of land, and then Ibiza to Cartegena, was 150nm (50% out of sight I'd say). On from Cart' to Almerimar was a further 120 that day so longest single days passage 270nm.

Not bad for a neebie

Re: No, seriously.....

I have lost site of land twice in one day more than once, most reasent two were both trips involving Jersey.

First was a delivery of a Brand new S38, from hamble to jersey, 4am start, flat calm seas and a wonderfull sunrise coming up behind us, nise boat ,nice run and no land in site for a couple or so hours. then avoided aldeney, gurnsey and found Jersey and new owner for the boat, then lunch on Jersey at a ycht club, and back to his old boat, an S34 to bring that back from Jersey to hambile. wind got up and on return journey we were out of site of land for about 4 hour, due to someone had gone and dug a lot of pot holes in the sea since that morning.

The other most recent one I will let Solitaire post about, as he came as my crew on it. And the boat names,/forums/images/icons/smile.gif

I'm curious. From a confimed ditch crawler comes a question regarding trips out of sight of land. Not something that you can do all that easily on the river. Plus the boat thats just gone was a coastal cruiser to be replaced by one, which most people consider, a inland cruiser.
Ok so we know you used top play Capitain Blyth on the south coast, but why the sudden interest in going forigen. Again something thats not that easy on the river. Or has Coliholic been goading you again.
Is the next installment "How do you cure Bogbrushesque type dogs of seasickness. Or my wife slapped me round the face with a wet fish and there was no where to escape. So prey tell, whats behind all this. Or am I the only sceptical person on this forum!!

Re: Just to add........

Yes have been outta sight of land. Poole to Cerbourg. 60 odd nautical miles. No gps no plotter, just a chart and a portland plotter compass pencil and a rubber. Good trip there smooth as anything and on the plane all the way. Smooth enuff even to use Basils Patent "oh my god how much petrol have we used already quick plug in the reserve tank" refulling device for inboard engines. Bit boring really and I hate France and the french!

Came back next day, well you would wouldn't you, which was a bit more lively. With wife screaming in one ear and the baby screaming down in the cuddy, cos the bungi cords you've use to suspend the carseat from the cabin roof are a bit too soft. So every wave boat goes up, baby stays down, but down side is, boat goes down and physics and the bingi's take over, so baby goes up at a rate of knots and leaves inprint on cabin headlining.
Had to stop on way back cos it was too ruff to use the "Oh my god how much petrol have we used already" refulling device for in board engines. Couldn't get the connecter in the hole see. Boat was pitching too much.

So yes have been outta sight of land in my ikkle trailery boat. And the bloody engine didn't miss a beat, which for a late 80's volvo has got to be a record.

We once went that far up the lake we lost site of the marina does that count ?

Seriously though, I have said many times that I would find losing sight of land a Hoot.
My partner however would not agree so I think the above is as daring as we will get.

As you know, B1, it can get very foggy on the Thames. Does this count?

Went over to France a few months ago, came out of Boulogne in 1/2 mile vis, turned round after one hour, went back into Boulogne without seeing harbour walls. Thank goodness for GPS and radar.

Always leave SWMBO on top helm. Can't hear her singing hymns when things get tough. Otherwise, you have to go a long way off the southern UK to get out of sight of land. Good as a laxative - not so good for hair colour.

Have a good Christmas

Too much boaty content

I would like to advise the honoured member and acknowledged old salt that this post is totally irrelevant as I have nothing to contribute; the subject matter being only related to boating.

i would also advise, in the interests of safety, that I would only ever lose sight of land in a vessel skippered by a competent sailor. Under pre-qualification rules this naturally excludes me from being the skipper.

Some other worthless observations:-

1) Why would anyone want to lose sight of land? Objective defeated as noone ashore can watch you posing.

2) While on someone else's boat I once lost all sensory ability including that of sight, however later informed this was due to Vino Collapso.

Do I qualify?
