Out Of Hours Power

OK slight missunderstanding to the meaning of LCD
Lowest Common Denominator in this case.......
Duh! , silly me I thought the grammar looked a bit strange. Too many acronyms around and not enough letters in the alphabet to differentiate between versions.

Having done two more OOHP locks this morning, some more observations.
It looks like it would be a relatively simple matter of adding an illuminating switch in the close paddles position (attended mode) as there is at Sandford....
That's interesting; may be a "special" (Sandford is non standard as there are extra push buttons for the gate sluices) and my source said there was no indication available of what the remote end was doing. Both ends say Red for down, green for up and flashing while operation is in progress, but only for that set.

Now another point is that both locks this AM had sluices closed one was empty and I needed to fill it so saved me a button push. The other was full so I had to wait while the sluices opened for no reason........I tried short pushes and the system doesn't recognise them it needs a good two seconds to set the sluices off.
AFAIK there are no sensors for how much water is in the chamber - probably too difficult / expensive to sense levels or differential levels at either end. Thus sluice up / down = start automatic process only. Can't operate gates until sluices are fully up, and pressing sluices down just stops the cycle.

The systems that are used lower down the Thames where you have to open the sluices manually seem to work far better and are far clearer cant understsnd why someone tried to reinvent the wheel after all the number of buttons is the same.

I'm glad someone agrees with me; was beginning to think I was "a man crying in the wilderness".

It would be nice to know if EA actually listen to these comments at the appropriate level (AQ has acknowledged receipt of written comments, but forwarded the details), but it would be nice to get some considered feedback - with the opportunity to make amendments if one knew their objections.

Lockies only (get to) operate the locks in attended mode and as such they say the new system is great because they can operate the sluices from the other end, and being grateful have left the matter there.

Except for Sonning resident who only ever seems to use the public operation, it's much quicker when the reliefs are on!

Following my recent trip from Bray to Wallingford and back, there are a couple of specific issues I will be raising with Reading but both regard the non attendance of staff during advertised hours rather than the operation of the OOP itself - in fact we had little reason to use the OOP as we almost always transited locks when staff were on duty.

However, at one lock the LK clearly packed up and left at 18:30 (!9:00 published - although not a lock where SA's are provided) and at Caversham one day last week there was Self Service at 13:45 and still no sign of staffing at 14:05 when we cleared.

Coming up stream some days earlier there was a notice at Sonning saying "Lock Staff off duty at !8:00" whereas coming downstream it did say 19:00 so presumabbly the 18:00 was unlikely to be an oversight.

In spite of the table published in the Customer Charter there seems to be a confusing regime of timekeeping for assisted lock passage with different interpretations amongst staff.

We did not become aware of any breakdowns or other interruptions regarding OOP and I would say we experienced a "good" trip.

Have noticed several of the lock keepers seem using the OOHP settings, Mapledurham was one.
All have been in attendance except Sanford who hadn't arrived when we cleared at 9.20.
Have used OOHP every morning as we like early starts so far no problems.
All I will say is are you surprised by Caversham, must have been on the phone.

Certainly not visible and can usually be seen pacing up and down with a mobile glued to the ear :D

Did come across on of those a bit further up though - completely locked through without once looking at me.

Wonder what sort of mobile phone contract tariff they have - I know you can get unlimited texts but is there one for unlimited minutes. S'pose they are all with the same supplier so that probably makes a difference

You sure they're using mobiles and not just a fixed land line with a cordless handset?

Don't really care what they're using - should be paying attention to the punters - don't they know its rude to be on the phone when you have visitors?

Give 'em all a handsetectomy ........

( I will now wait for someone to respond with 'ear 'ear .....)
