In our local newspaper I saw the results of a recent police amnesty for weapons included several marine flares.

I found it really hard to dispose of some out of date ones recently.

Not sure what the "official" take on this would be but it made me wonder if its an option for the future.

What do others think ?

well in these H & S days they have no difficulty describing toy airguns as firearms and treating penknives as weapons of mass destruction so I'm sure they would happily treat old flares as explosives. in fact I think they already have done in some cases.

" para deleted in the interest of H & S ie some plonker might think I was being serious."

on the other hand, just let off everything bar the parachute flares on bonfire night reasonable inland..

When I took a load of out of date flares (they came with the boat) to the police station in Aberystwyth, they nearly arrested me under the terrorism act! I was told in no uncertain terms to remove myself and they explosives from the premisses imediatly and to never return with them.

When I tried to explain to them that if I turned up at a football/rugby match with them, they would quite happily take them off me. They totaly ape sh*t with me.

If you live near Troon, Ardrossan, Farlie or Largs marinas I have a licence to take time expired flares.

Patrons of the Scottish Boat Jumble have the opportunity to dispose of their time expired flares free of charge however, a donation to the RNLI will sweeten the deal.

Try to contact the police or army bomb disposal squad and ask their advice.

When I contacted the police in RSA about some out of date flares I has, that was their advice.

I recently found a chandlery who take OOD flares in return when purchasing new flares - if people only buy from chandlers who will do this the problem should soon be solved.

WHat about your local coastguard? Solent try to make it sound difficult on paper, but were very helpful on the phone, and took mine (a few that were on Jissel when I bought her going back to the '80's /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif ) no problem
