Six months on the water has passed again and our boat was lifted out yesterday.

Last week was a school holiday week and we spent most of it on the boat taking it from it’s home berth in Helsinki to Inkoo, we she will spend the winter in a warm shed. The weather was fantastic at the beginning of the week with temps at around 15 C, but towards midweek it started getting colder and on Thursday morning the pontoon was covered with frost. Yesterday we saw the first tiny flakes of snow…

It’s unbelievable how quickly the boating season has passed again. Despite the pretty rubbish weather we spent a lot of time onboard, and our summer highlight was the cruise to the Swedish coast. Mechanically the boat was flawless, but there are a couple of minor updates I have planned for the coming winter.

Time to start dreaming about the summer ahead, I suppose…

I took some vid from the autumns last cruise. It starts from our home base in Helsinki, we then pass the lighthouse at Porkkala and at the end we visit a sauna in Älgsjö/Barösund.

Scubaman another superbly composed, shot, and edited video. :encouragement:
Elegance is the word that comes to mind. Enjoy the winter dreaming of next seasons adventures.

Out of idle curiosity, I looked for Inkoo on Google Maps: is it the location W of Helsinki, along the coast?
If so, I must have missed the change in your winter arrangement, from your old location in Lake Saimaa.
Regardless, some magic locations indeed, and a beautifully made video as always - thanks for posting it! :encouragement:

My only concern is that you seem to spend a fair bit of your cruising time at pretty slow speed.
Did you ask Portofino's approval for such low load/EGT usage - and at your rather low temperature, too...!? :D

Thank you gentlemen for the kind words, I appreciate them.

This is our second year wintering in Inkoo away from Saimaa. We wanted to explore the Baltic for another year (and plan to do so also next year) so the round trip to Savonlinna seemed too much trouble, as nice as it is. Also cost wise it made sense to keep the boat closer to our home berth.

Btw, here is a link to Älgsjö, the narrow inlet on the vid, only a very short hop west from Inkoo. A beautiful place. -> https://www.google.fi/maps/place/El...5140668c0!8m2!3d59.9795467!4d23.9110149?hl=en

Regarding cruising speed; of the miles we covered, maybe 90% was done at a healthy 24 knots, but I must admit that we have also done quite a bit of displacement cruising this summer. Though judging from the vids I've posted, the ratio may seem disproportionately high as flying the drone has been easier at displacement speeds :).

In fact, I thought about Portofino at one point when I did some 'Italian tuning' at the end of our cruise. Still saw 30,6 knots on the gps which wasn't bad considering that there was, by our standards, considerable fouling on the bottom. I thought PF would approve :).

Hmm, if you spotted the dials on the vid, well done, the temps are a bit low, need to check the thermostats :encouragement:. Though on that part we were also doing only 10 knots as it was a bit bumpy around the lighthouse.

It’s a nice vid Scubaman , makes a change from the usual “ tits n bums , frolicking about in clear warm water “ Med vids

Bit hard for us Med boaters to imagine most of that scenery will be frozen soon until spring .

It’s not so much jacket temps ,of course ideal if you can get em up ,it’s the cylinder temp / pressure .
But as I think we all generally agree some timely “ Italian tune up “ is needed , if you spending a lot of time at low load .

Just as a matter of interest and perhaps more pertinent to your circumstances, when do you change the oil ?

Hard to imagine boating wearing cloths other than swimwear tbo

I change the oil in the spring after the boat is back in the water. I run the engines to operating temp and the change the oil and filters. It is a common practice here to change the oil during the lay up period, which spreads the work nicely over the winter for the engineers. I’m not sure which is better but like the ease of draining the oil from a warm engine.

It has to be said that it is equally hard to imagine boating in swimwear and in crystal clear waters at the mo :(.

LOL, it's a pity that you didn't post this a couple of days ago K, because atm we have a strong Mistral which will surely cool down sea water a bit, but earlier this week I could have posted a pic showing not just boating in swimwear, but also swimming!

Very nice video and beautiful boating scene. I wish to have a chance to visit Helsinki someday.

Good job, Scuba Man. Thank you very much for sharing with us.

Oh, we got to swim alright. Pity the water was only 10 degrees :ambivalence:. Not quite the same, I admit...

Edit: forgot to add that yesterday L and I prepared some black pasta (ála spaghetti alla Vittorio) with salmon sauce, which actually turned out pretty okay. The food together with some Italian music did take us back to sunny Carloforte for a while :).

Very nice Scubaman. We will do the season ending cruise incomming weekend and also bring the boat to Inkoo for the winter. With a good heater that distributes the heat to all areas including the bathrooms it is very nice and cozy out there still. What a nice contrast to the summer.

Thanks!

You are right, cruising in the autumn can be very nice. Lot's of space everywhere and beautiful scenery.

Regarding heating and I've probably mentioned this before, but we use the cockpit throughout the season and in fact, the last thing we did when we left the boat was we carried the saloon table from the cockpit back into the saloon for the winter. A good heater is a make or break for family boating.

...the weather forecast was so ugly yesterday that I decided to skip the weekend cruise and bring the boat straigh away to Inkoo. The forecast showed temperatures down to -10C at night, 20 m/s northern wind gusts and 10 cm of snow. The crew said no and there is also a risk of ice formation around my dock :-(.
