Any liveaboard tips on the best methods for storing fresh food in the Mediterranean; bread, vegetables, fruit etc. We have a chest-type fridge on board.

veggies & fruit, dry & in nets, but do not mix

Bread, in polythene or in or in oven or microwave with a damp tissue to keep moist, but 2-3 days max, but this is the Med we are talking about. Fresh bread every day, best there is.

We have a plastic dividing tray half way up our chest fridge and keep the bottom very cold (around 1 to 3C) the top stays cool - around 10-15C depending on the weather. We pile the fruit, veg and bread onto the divider and it keeps quite well. It is a bit of a hassle when getting the stuff from the cold section below, but we manage. You could use baskets.

Keep vegetables hanging from nets (in usually unoccupied aft cabin). Bread fresh most days though multigrain keeps best especially in Slav countries.
Beware bananas - they accelerate ripening in contiguous fruit.
Avoid any chilled fruit and veg if you can, it lasts about 35% of the time of unchilled produce and tastes far inferior, even if it doesn't looks better.
Fish and meat kept in lower part of top-loading fridge, with beer, salad stuff in top part, with dairy produce.
Best not to buy low alcohol beer, the ASU unit manages to freeze it, if motoring for more than about 3 hours.

Fruit and veggies from organic market stall, last twice as long, salad stuff and fruit best in fridge, again lasts longer.
Onions, spuds, "hard veggies" ok in nets in coolish place with ventilation, keep dry. Spuds in the light, or they will sprout.
Bananas as has been said! Keep away from other fruit, best not in same cabin.
Bread, fresh meddy bread, does not last well, but wonderful fresh!
In Spain if you want sliced bread that lasts, Bimbo. Or some of the wholebrain Bimbo type. Have a look.

By the way Charles I think you meant "Superior!"

yes, a bit convoluted

but I think the sense is right - the chilled stuff doesn't taste as good as the fresh, local produce.

I've a bit of a hang-up (having been brought up farming) with the term "organic" - shew me an inorganic swede!!

Personally I think it's a marketing ploy by the supermarkets to rip-off the gullible townies.

Fortunately, in Europe but outside the UK, no-one comments on the difference at point of sale.
