Ouch!

The first year. Its case of plucking up the courage/enthusiasm to have a go usually to save money, everybody says its all fairly basic simple stuff.Innit!
The second year you do the job this changes as to if you really want to struggle with the bluddy thing again next year.
The third year you finally realise what a pain in the bottom the job is and seriously consider getting somebody(anybody) to do it.
The fourth year you are browsing the boat ads religiously removing anything with outdrives from the "possibles" list.

Not quite.

The first year you pay through the nose for someone "proffesional" to do the job
The second year you pluck up the courage to do the job, realise it is easy and realise what a bodge job the "proffesional" did the year before.
The third year you get quicker at servicing the leg and wonder what all of the fuss was about
By the fourth year you realise its a doddle and dont understand why anybody is paying through the nose to get the job done.

My third year and third leg service. Still getting someone else doing it.
2nd year, I do my own engine servicing other than the impeller as its too tight a space to work in.

I guess that very much depends how the engine bay in your boat is laid out. Ours although not huge and with a big green lump wedged in is still fairly easy to service. All of the service bits are easy to access and on the front of the engine (barring the crankcase filter but this is still easy to get at). Our impellor is alos on the front and a doddle to change now thanks to the Speed Seal we fitted.
